The first three years (2020-2023) of the current-generation Silverado heavy-duty knocked out a lot of initial problems for this new iteration of these trucks. General Motors has been on top of it with warranty claims and recalls so far. With growing pains out of the way, though, there are still some issues and recalls affecting the 2024-2026 model year Silverado 2500. These include some persistent transmission issues, failures in the valve body, a weird random tailgate opening scenario, and several technology glitches.

Silverado 2500 Transmission Recalls – Yes, Plural

2024 Silverado HD trucks have been given a recall for a direct overdrive carrier failure in the 10-speed transmission. These transmissions were built with an incorrect caged piston bearing that can cause severe gear slippage, vibration, and transmission lockup. Affected transmissions are replaced entirely. This is GM recall number N242467600.

Another recall involves a transmission control valve incorrectly locking the rear wheels while driving. This recall, GM N242454440, affects several Silverado HD truck models as well as several other Chevrolet and General Motors vehicles. The fix is a simple software update to the transmission control module which detects abnormal wear on the control valve in question.

On this issue, one owner states: “I was merging onto the interstate going 70 mph when the truck violently downshifted. The rear tires locked up, and the truck went sideways. It almost caused a catastrophic multi-car accident. The dash lit up with a reduced propulsion warning, but the sudden lock-up nearly killed me.”

In a third transmission problem, a known issue regards a battery choice in some Silverado HD models. Faulty factory-installed batteries cause transmission sensors to trigger limp mode while driving. This severely limits truck operation, but seems limited mostly to 2024 model year trucks.

Valve Body Failure Sending Trucks Into Limp Mode

The 6.6-liter engines (both gas and diesel) in some Silverado 2500 models can experience valve body failures. This sends the trucks into limp mode, severely limiting operation. The issue appears early (pre-10,000 miles) for most of the trucks involved and the fix is a valve body and/or transmission replacement. The fix is covered under warranty and most reports involve diesel engines with gas engine complaints being much more rare.

Trucks affected by this problem are usually in the 2024-2025 model years and the dealership warranty replacements seem to resolve the issue.

This was a HUGE issue last year and we covered it extensively last year. Many aftermarket companies came to market with new valve body modules when GM’s replacements were on back order. The software update, mentioned above, is to monitor the status of the transmission to determine if a new valve body modules is ultimately needed.

Incredibly, GM screwed up the software patch for 1,000 trucks and had to recall those to install the new software.

Power Unlatch Tailgate Pops Open Unexpectedly

General Motors has issued a blanket recall for 2020-2026 model year Silverado HD trucks equipped with the power tailgate option. Water intruding into the tailgate can short-circuit the electronic release switch and cause the tailgate to drop unexpectedly. Safety overrides mean that this only happens while the truck is in park, so it has not appeared to have caused loads under way to release.

One owner writes, regarding his 2023 Silverado 2500: “The tailgate has unlatched itself in the driveway on multiple occasions. It is only a matter of time before it damages itself or hits someone walking behind the truck. GM’s initial ‘fix’ was just to disable the switch, which leaves me without a working feature I paid for.” Note that the new recall issued replaces the switch, including swapping those disabled for the initial recall.

GM recall numbers for this are N232426400 for 2020-2024 models and N242460160 for 2025-2026 model year trucks. The fix is replacement of the switch assembly for the tailgate with a waterproofed part.

Touchscreen and USB Glitches Persist

Several technical service bulletins and consumer complaints for the Silverado 2500 revolve around technology problems. Infotainment screens can glitch, have color faults, or fail to deliver requested applications.

USB receptacles in the trucks can sometimes lose power, fail to charge connected devices, or fail to connect for data. The various issues are usually software-related, though at least one TSB points towards faulty wiring.

How To Check For Recalls On Your Truck

The easiest way to check for current recalls that may affect your Silverado 2500 is to visit the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) Recalls page and enter your license plate or 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to run a search. You can also do this at the GM Owner Center.
