Our 2023-2026 Nissan Frontier known problems list includes transmission complaints, electrical issues and recalls. Before you buy one of these midsize trucks, check this list first.

It is worth noting, the Nissan Frontier has earned praise from buyers looking for a more traditional midsize pickup with a naturally aspirated V6 engine and fewer complicated features than some rivals.

This list includes information from NHTSA.gov, CarComplaints.com and Consumer Reports. Keep in mind, this is a list of problems that some, not all have experienced.

Among recent model years, the 2023 Nissan Frontier generated the highest concentration of owner complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the other websites we noted.

Many complaints centered around the truck’s electrical system, transmission behavior and infotainment system. Owners described warning lights appearing unexpectedly, intermittent no-start conditions and backup camera failures. Some also reported engine hesitation and occasional stalling concerns.

Transmission complaints were another common theme. Drivers reported rough shifting, delayed acceleration, hard downshifts and jerking at lower speeds. In many cases, owners said dealers either could not duplicate the issue or claimed the shifting behavior was considered normal.

Unlike the major engine failures impacting some competitors, Frontier complaints appear more scattered and less catastrophic overall. However, the number of recurring complaints suggests some owners continue experiencing drivability and quality-control frustrations.

Transmission Complaints Continue to Follow the 9-Speed Automatic

One of the most commonly discussed Frontier issues involves the truck’s 9-speed automatic transmission.

Owners have reported:

  • Harsh upshifts and downshifts
  • Delayed engagement when accelerating
  • Gear hunting at highway speeds
  • Jerking or clunking during low-speed driving
  • Hesitation during throttle tip-in

Some owners also referenced earlier recalls involving the transmission parking pawl system, where the truck could potentially roll away if Park was not properly engaged.

Here is one example from NHTSA.gov:

“Vehicle gears down for no reason, then gets stuck in that gear. I have tried to manually shift it when it does this, but it still will not shift gears.Takes off in 2nd gear very often.”

The 9-speed automatic used in the Frontier is related to transmissions found in several other vehicles across the industry, and outright transmission failures do not appear widespread. Instead, most complaints focus on drivability refinement and inconsistent shift calibration.

Several owners reported dealer software updates improved shifting behavior, although complaints continue appearing in owner forums and NHTSA filings.

Electrical and Infotainment Problems Remain Common Complaints

Electrical issues and infotainment glitches have become another recurring complaint category for recent Nissan Frontier trucks.

Owners have reported:

  • Battery drain complaints
  • Backup camera failures
  • Black infotainment screens
  • Frozen displays
  • Random dashboard warning lights
  • Bluetooth connection issues
  • Intermittent no-start conditions

For the 2023 Nissan Frontier, many complaints surround a battery issue like this one on NHTSA.gov:

“We have a fleet of 2023-2025 Nissan Frontiers. Starting in December of 2024 we began having problems with the vehicles electrical system going wild and shutting the trucks down. It causes all of the lights to come on and the truck to stall and not restart, We did not realize that we had a problem until it happened to multiple vehicles over the last several months. A few of them were brought to the dealership where we were told they could not find any problems and just replaced the batteries. So, when some of the others did it, we just replaced the batteries ourselves. This week asked again if there was a known issue and were told Nissan only knows of a battery drain issue. These vehicles are shutting down sometimes while our people are driving them. They also try to restart themselves sometimes. They are automatically applying the breaks when this happens wile the ABS light comes on. This is an extremely dangerous situation for our fleet drivers as well as the motoring public. It has happened to 10 of the 15 Frontiers that we own.”

One major recall affecting newer Frontier trucks involved a software communication issue that could cause the rearview camera image to fail while reversing. Since backup camera functionality is federally required, the issue triggered a safety recall covering thousands of vehicles.

While many of the complaints appear software-related rather than major hardware failures, the growing number of electrical reports has become a noticeable trend for newer Frontier trucks.

Nissan Issued Several Recalls for 2025 and 2026 Frontier Trucks

Nissan has issued several recalls affecting the 2025 and 2026 Frontier in recent months.

One of the largest recalls involved a rearview camera software problem that could cause the center display screen to show a blank image while the truck was in reverse.

Additional recalls included:

  • Daytime running lights that could briefly dim during auto stop-start restarts
  • Improperly welded door strikers that could crack or separate
  • Windshield defects involving air bubbles or delamination that could reduce visibility

While none of these recalls appear connected to widespread engine failures, they do suggest Nissan continues addressing quality-control and supplier-related issues on newer Frontier production.

Owners should check their VIN through NHTSA or Nissan dealer service departments to confirm all recall repairs have been completed.

Consumer Reports Snapshot

Looking at the Consumer Reports data, it mirrors what we found above.

The 2023 Nissan Frontier gets a below average score for reliability while the newer model years like 2024, 2025 and 2026 all have higher reliability scores. Those model years also get a Consumer Reports recommended pick.

Consumer Reports survey dates points to build quality issues holding the truck back like paint, electrical and battery issues, noise and leaks, etc.

Owner satisfaction scores, though, are very average compared to the rest of the midsize truck lineup.

Final Thoughts on 2023-2026 Nissan Frontier Known Problems

What does all of this mean? The big item like the engine didn’t come up in our research as having big problems. That’s a good thing since that’s the most expensive item to replace in this midsize truck. There’s a reason Nissan is advertising their V6 engine – it’s reliability is a strong selling point for this midsize truck in a truck market where competitor’s engines are having issues.

Transmission issues are concerning, but the number of complaints we found (in the hundreds) versus the number of Nissan Frontiers they sell each year (65,232 in 2025) tells you this isn’t a very common issue so far. However, it is something to keep an eye on since these trucks are just now racking up miles.

The other concerns are scattered and likely have been hard for Nissan engineers to pinpoint what is going on. Rest assured they are chasing these down.

Finally, the owner satisfaction scores are interesting. People like the Frontier for its reliability and less tech than its competitors. I’m surprised that hasn’t translated into higher scores from the Consumer Reports surveys. Just odd.
