Update (February 27, 2026): ‘Design,’ ‘Interior,’ ‘Specifications’ and ‘Pricing & Availability’ updated.

Toyota’s sixth-generation RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) arrives at U.S. dealers in spring 2026 with a longer electric range, more power, and standard AWD. The PHEV sits within the sport and rugged designs across four grades: SE, XSE, Woodland, and the first-ever (for the U.S.) GR Sport.

Toyota manufactures the PHEV in Japan, and recently we got up close with the compact SUV’s GR Sport trim, experiencing its design, space, comfort, and features. Here are our key observations of the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR Sport.

Design

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR Sport adds a sporty edge to the exterior of the sixth-generation RAV4. An exclusive Functional Matrix grille featuring a hexagonal G-mesh pattern immediately gives away the GR trim’s identity. There’s also a small GR badge on this grille.

A squarish gloss black housing at the lower corners of the bumper extends into the grille and also integrates an exclusive vertical LED accent light at both ends. A gloss black Toyota logo completes the distinctive look at the front.

Wide piano black overfenders, piano black mirrors, GR-branded, red-colored brake calipers, and specially designed 20-inch wheels featuring black pearl machined finish and increased offset with black lug nuts continue the sportier styling along the sides.

At the rear, a diffuser with a lower bumper valance and a GR Sport logo on the tailgate are the key exterior changes.

Interior

The interior of the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR Sport adds sportiness to the driver-focused design of the sixth-generation RAV4. In the front, it features sport seats upholstered in a combination of Brin Naub synthetic suede and SofTex, along with black and red dual-tone perforation and a GR logo on the headrests.

Toyota also includes aluminum sport pedals and a GR-branded steering wheel with paddle shifters. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster welcomes the driver with an exclusive start-up screen. GR-branded front door scuff plates and red accent stitching throughout the cabin are also among the exclusive features of the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR Sport.

Experience in the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR Sport

At 5’7″, I found the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid easy to get into during my time with it at the show.

The seating position felt natural, and the driver’s seat provided excellent back support and good under-thigh support, though it might feel average for someone six-foot or taller. I had around six inches of headroom, and visibility was excellent in all directions, front, sides, and rear.

In the back, I had good back support and about five inches of headroom. A recline function was available,  further improving comfort. The under-thigh support felt adequate for my height, but taller occupants might find it a bit short.

Legroom was slightly tight, though I still had around six inches of knee clearance with the driver’s seat set to my most comfortable position. Rear-seat amenities include two 15-watt USB-C charging ports, rear air vents, and a fold-out central armrest with two cup holders.

Specifications

Platform & Dimensions

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid rides on the TNGA-K platform and has a 105.9 in. wheelbase. The GR Sport measures 182.9 in. in length, 74.0 in. in width, and 66.3 in. in height. This makes the sporty trim 1.9 in. longer, 1.0 in. wider, and 0.6 in. lower than the base SE trim. The reduction in height is wholly due to the lowered ground clearance.

Toyota applies silicon carbide semiconductors on the front axle to improve efficiency and packaging. GR Sport receives additional chassis tuning, a reinforced rear suspension cross member, performance dampers, and dedicated power steering mapping for Sport mode.

Ride and refinement will benefit thanks to a stiffer body, updated bushings, new shocks, and an active front aerodynamic spat that deploys at speed. Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard across the range.

Powertrain

The A25A-FXS 2.5-liter direct-injection gas engine and two permanent magnet synchronous motors, one in the front and one in the rear, power the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. The gas engine produces 186 hp and 172 lb.-ft. of torque. The PMSM in the front develops 203 hp and 201 lb.-ft. of torque.

Toyota has not disclosed the power of the PMSM in the rear, but it states 91 lb.-ft. as its torque. The rear motor’s sole function is to enable all-wheel drive and increase traction when needed.

In total, the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid gets 324 hp from its electrified powertrain. Toyota says the SE, XSE, and Woodland trims can tow up to 3,500 lbs. but does not recommend towing with the GR Sport trim.

Manufacturer-estimated fuel economy (combined) reaches 41 mpg on the SE and XSE, 38 mpg on the Woodland, and 37 mpg on the GR Sport.

Charging & Range

A 22.7 kWh battery pack powers the front and rear electric motors. The GR Sport trim and the base SE trim have a 7 kW on-board charger and a J1772 charging port. They take approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge. All the trims come with a dual-voltage 120V-240V portable cable.

EPA ratings are pending, but according to Toyota’s estimates, the electric range has improved by 23 percent. SE and XSE are officially expected for up to 52 miles of EV driving, Woodland for 49 miles, and GR Sport for 48 miles.

Pricing & Availability

The new RAV4 PHEV models will reach U.S. dealers in spring 2026, and we expect prices to start at under USD 45,000.
