5 features we found fascinating in the Mercedes-AMG GT XX Concept

The Concept AMG GT XX is Affalterbach’s first attempt at a completely battery-powered car. At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, we had the opportunity to take a close look at its design and features. Here are five things I found intriguing during my time with the vehicle:

1. Sports car first, family car second

The first thing I noticed seeing the Mercedes-AMG GT XX Concept in person was that it looks like a family car born from a true sports car, rather than a sports car modified for family duty like the GT 4-Door Coupe.

The design looks almost production-ready, and in the current form, we doubt rear-seat passengers will get much visibility outside through the rear windows. The glasshouse is extremely slim and gets even smaller toward the end on purpose, completing its proper sports car-like appearance.

2. Wider than you’d think

Images don’t do justice to just how wide and flat the Mercedes-AMG GT XX Concept looks in person. This stance is key to its authentic sports car proportions, second only in presence to the roughly two-million-dollar Koenigsegg Gemera. The Concept AMG GT XX is 204.9 in. long, 76.6 in. wide, and 51.9 in. tall.

3. Hints of Maserati and EQXX

When we saw the Concept AMG GT XX from the front three-quarters angle, it reminded us of some recent Maseratis, especially the MC20. This resemblance was largely due to the concave front grille with vertical slats and the slim, upward-swept headlamps. From the side, it shows a resemblance to the Mercedes EQXX concept that debuted in 2022.

4. Balancing downforce and drag

No matter the angle, every surface appears engineered to balance downforce and drag for optimal stability. We particularly liked the wide power domes on the hood, each with two fins.

The vehicle boasts three axial flux motors, one in the front and two at the back, with a combined output of over 1,341 hp. Much like the motors, the battery pack is a groundbreaking innovation, featuring direct-cooled cylindrical cells engineered for sustained driving and charging performance.

5. Captivating taillights

In stark contrast to the Mercedes-AMG GT XX Concept’s soft, understated front, its rear is bold and expressive. The triple taillamps with hollow inner sections create a three-dimensional effect, and their exposed circular design evokes memories of the McLaren F1. That said, the illuminated MBUX Fluid Light Panel between them feels a touch excessive.

The AMG GT XX Concept has a top speed of over 224 mph and charges at up to a whopping 850 kW. Mercedes-AMG estimates it can add up to approximately 249 miles of range in just five minutes, as per WLTP. The company is expected to launch the production version in 2026.
