Tesla’s “affordable” Model Y rendered ahead of its Q4 2025 release

The long-awaited “affordable model” is not a compact “Tesla Model Q” or “Tesla Model 2” as many assumed. It’s a simpler version of the current midsize Model Y crossover. While there have been sightings of camouflaged test prototypes recently, a clip posted on X (by ElectricIsraeli) offered a good look at the cost-cutting measures.

During the company’s Q2 2025 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the previously announced affordable car was “just a Model Y.” “Fundamentally, the biggest obstacle remains that so many people…the desire to buy the car (Model Y) is very high, just people don’t have enough money in the bank account to buy it. Literally that’s the issue. Not a lack of desire, but a lack of ability. So the more affordable we can make the car, the better,” he said on July 23, 2025.

Confirming what was hinted by other top company officials during the Q1 2025 call, the “affordable” variant will look similar to the Model Y, borrowing its shell, most metal panels, and interior. Our exclusive illustration highlights the areas that will change.

As reflected in our rendering, the budget Model Y is expected to have new bumpers, simpler lighting, smaller wheels, and fewer exterior colors. Premium features such as the glass roof, rear screen, ventilated seats, and high-end audio are likely to be deleted.

Tesla’s Q2 2025 investor presentation that was released on the same day confirmed that trial production had started in June. Musk said the model will be “available for everyone” between October and December 2025. We’re expecting a cheaper Model 3 version to follow.

Lars Moravy, VP of Vehicle Engineering, had already set expectations during the Q1 2025 earnings call on April 22, 2025. “They will resemble, in form and shape, the cars we currently make,” he said, stressing affordability over design changes for the upcoming affordable variants.

The affordable Model Y appears to have reverted to the “combined” front lighting that’s simpler and less expensive. We also observe changes to the bumpers and wheels, which will be simplified in the interest of cost savings.

The company will manufacture the variants on existing production lines, which limits the scope for design changes but avoids expensive retooling. This is in line with Tesla’s approach to create derivatives from its current platforms, such as the long-wheelbase Model Y and long-range Model 3 for China.

The recently sighted test prototype suggests headlamps have moved back up to hood level, without a connecting light bar. The rear appears to have a simpler tailgate akin to the 2024 model, and standard brake lights. Tesla hasn’t confirmed mechanical changes, but smaller wheels and tires would cut costs further.

The interior will be de-contented, with fewer features, and likely just basic ambient lighting. Appointments like powered folding seats, acoustic glass, upgraded upholstery, clothes hooks, heated steering wheel, center console piece, and premium sound system are not expected.

During our time with the Model Y refresh, we felt that Tesla had raised the bar in look, feel, and quality. However, deleting nice-to-have features lowers the price and monthly payments for many buyers who aspire Tesla ownership.

Musk aims to bring the Model Y within reach of more buyers in the U.S. through a lower entry price (around USD 35,000, before incentives, would be ideal) and reduced monthly payments. Moravy says the move also ensures Tesla’s factories run at full capacity without demanding heavy investments.
