Production-bound EV I first saw in Paris

Volkswagen is preparing to launch the ID. Polo GTI in 2026, its first production EV to wear the GTI badge. Revealed as a camouflaged prototype ahead of IAA Mobility 2025, the hot hatch builds on the ID. Polo and introduces a fresh nomenclature that introduces popular VW combustion-era nameplates into the ID. family.

Design

The ID. Polo GTI shares its underpinnings with the standard ID. Polo, riding on the MEB Entry platform. While the prototype remains disguised, the GTI version carries more aggressive cues. Flared wheel arches, a small front diffuser, twin roof spoilers, and bumper cutouts that mimic exhausts distinguish it from the ID. Polo. Larger alloys in a unique design, and soft red accents are expected to complete the look.

I had the chance to see the precursor at the Paris Motor Show 2024, where Volkswagen displayed the ID. GTI Concept. When I walked up to the concept, it struck me as an all-electric successor to the Polo GTI, around 85% production-ready.

Features like oversized wheels and low-profile tires felt exaggerated, but the brake discs with red calipers gave it real presence. Details such as a lightning symbol on the diffuser hinted at Volkswagen’s intent to inject character into its future hot hatches.

Specifications

Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID. Polo GTI will use a single front-mounted electric motor producing 223 hp, Autocar UK has reported. A 56 kWh battery is likely to come standard, which in the regular ID. Polo is expected to provide about 280 miles of range (WLTP). A front-axle differential lock managed by a Vehicle Dynamics Manager, previewed on the concept, should sharpen handling and traction.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen is evaluating a Clubsport model targeting 282 hp, and engineers are even studying the feasibility of a 400 hp all-wheel-drive R variant with in-wheel motors, Autocar’s report adds.

Interior & Features

The Paris concept didn’t allow cabin access, and the prototype revealed ahead of IAA also came with heavily tinted windows. However, Volkswagen has promised higher-quality materials, physical buttons for key controls, and an intuitive touchscreen infotainment system.

GTI-specific details such as sport seats, contrast stitching and accents, sport pedals, unique upholstery in parts of the cabin, and a drive mode selector are expected to give it distinction.

The concept also introduced GTI Experience Control, which can adjust performance characteristics and replicate the feel and sound of past GTI models via the audio system. This feature is likely to make its way into production.

U.S. Launch

The ID. Polo GTI will arrive in Europe in 2026, coinciding with the Polo’s 50th anniversary. While the little hatchback is well-suited to metros, its compact size and modest range make a U.S. launch unlikely. From my experience with the concept, it looks like an ideal entry-level performance EV for European buyers, but not a car designed with American roads in mind.
