Update: The article has been updated with new product info, pricing, release details, and photos.

Unlike the current electric SUV that is sold in Asia and Europe (you can see our review here), the second-generation BMW iX3 has been confirmed for the U.S., featuring faster charging, longer range, more space, and improvements in all other aspects over today’s model.

Design

The next-gen BMW iX3 takes on a sportier and more aerodynamic form. It features an all-new exterior with cues borrowed from the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X concept.

The new iX3 gets a rather unconventional front-end, featuring wide glass panels that reach far into the center of the upper part and integrate two slanted light signatures at the extreme ends and low- and high-beam lights on the inner sides.

A narrow and vertically slotted kidney grille, flanked by two wide panels featuring smooth surfaces, integrate the headlights at the extreme ends. Only one functional grille, located in the lower part of the bumper, serves the cooling needs of the EV’s drive components.

On the sides, the future electric midsize SUV gets expansive glass panels that give occupants excellent visibility of the surroundings. Flush-fitted door handles, frameless door windows, and reduced use of character lines lend it a cleaner and more sophisticated look. The rear-end is powerful and athletic and emphasizes the EV’s width with tail lamps that reach far into the center.

Interior

The new BMW iX3 features a completely reimagined cabin based on Neue Klasse principles. BMW’s Panoramic iDrive now takes center stage, replacing the traditional instrument cluster with a wide-format projection onto a darkened section of the windscreen. This setup, spanning from A-pillar to A-pillar, puts key driving data in the driver’s natural line of sight.

A 3D head-up display sits above this layer, offering navigation and driving assistance cues. The central touchscreen uses matrix backlighting for better contrast and clarity. BMW’s new Operating System X supports these interfaces with a mix of digital and physical controls for easier use.

The redesigned steering wheel includes illuminated haptic controls that respond only when needed. A single “shy-tech” button integrates multiple functions to reduce visual clutter.

Interior materials follow BMW’s circularity strategy, using recycled PET fabrics, maritime plastics, and secondary aluminum in key trim pieces. With improved ergonomics, ambient lighting, and eco-focused materials, the iX3 cabin prioritizes comfort, sustainability, and ease of use.

Specifications

Platform and Powertrain

The next-gen iX3 is built on the Neue Klasse platform, developed exclusively for electric models. It uses BMW’s Gen6 eDrive technology, which introduces a new motor architecture, revised battery design, and 800V charging system. Customers will have the choice between EESM (Externally Excited Synchronous Motor) and ASM (Asynchronous Motor) setups, tailored for performance or efficiency.

The iX3 50 xDrive variant debuts the Gen6 electric motor produced in Steyr, Austria. This new unit is lighter by 10%, reduces energy losses by 40%, and cuts production costs by 20% compared to the outgoing system. It includes an inverter with SiC semiconductors and improved cooling, enabling quicker response and better efficiency.

Heart of Joy

The “Heart of Joy” high-performance computer manages all drivetrain, braking, and steering subfunctions. It processes inputs 10 times faster than before and supports precise cornering, seamless regenerative braking, and highly responsive power delivery.

Battery and Range

The high-voltage battery in the iX3 50 xDrive has a capacity of 108 kWh. This flat-pack cylindrical cell design increases energy density by 20% over Gen5. WLTP range is up to 800 km (approx. 400 miles EPA), with real-world energy consumption of 15.0 kWh/100 km (62 miles), a 20% drop from the outgoing model. BMW says over 85 km (53 miles) of the added range stems purely from motor and inverter efficiency improvements.

Charging Features

Charging is possible at up to 400 kW, adding over 350 km (220 miles) in just 10 minutes. Charging from 400V DC stations remains compatible. The new BMW Wallbox allows charging at up to 19.2 kW (AC), and will be announced for the U.S. soon.

The U.S.-spec model will come fitted with the NACS (North American Charging Standard) port as standard.

The iX3 supports bidirectional charging: Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G). A smart charging flap opens automatically based on AI cues, such as proximity to a familiar charging station.

Cargo & Towing

The iX3 has a frunk capacity of 2.0 cu.ft. The cargo capacity stands at 30.4 cu.ft., which is expandable to 65 cu.ft. with the rear seats folded down. BMW says that the iX3 has a towing capacity of up to 4,400 lbs with the optional trailer hitch.

Sustainability

One-third of the vehicle is built using secondary materials. BMW uses recycled PET in seat fabrics and fishing net-derived plastics in engine bay components. 740 kg (1,631 pounds) of the car is from reused materials, as per Forbes.

Gen6 batteries include 50% recycled cobalt, lithium, and nickel. Total CO₂ emissions per watt-hour are down 42% compared to Gen5. The Debrecen factory in Hungary, where the iX3 is produced, operates entirely on renewable electricity and emits just 0.1 tons of CO₂ per vehicle.

Driver Assistance and Tech

The iX3 introduces next-gen ADAS powered by AI and BMW’s “Superbrain of Automated Driving,” which processes data 20 times faster than older systems. New features include Motorway & City Assist, predictive lane changes, cooperative steering, and smart braking. A new “Assisted View” visualizes the driving environment on all three screens. Over-the-air updates will extend features post-launch, including voice assistant upgrades via the BMW Cloud.

BMW Group has confirmed that production of the first Neue Klasse electric model will take place at a new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, from late 2025. As for the U.S.-spec cars, production is set to kick off in early 2026. BMW is also expected to add iX3 production at the BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí (Mexico) by 2027, as reported by BMWBlog.

Release Date and Price

The next-gen BMW iX3 will have its public debut at the IAA 2025 (Munich Motor Show) which begins on September 8. The European launch is scheduled for early November 2025. In the U.S., customer deliveries of the next-gen iX3 will begin in summer of 2026. The iX3 will initially come in the xDrive 50 variant, with U.S. prices starting at around USD 60,000.

TopElectricSUV says

BMW Group can’t afford to ignore America’s most popular luxury EV segment for long. Though it did not bring down the first-gen iX3 due to its limited range, performance, and lack of AWD, the next-generation iX3 was always a certainty.

Besides its generational improvement in user experience, the redesigned electric midsize SUV is significantly more efficient and offers a longer range than the current model. And with an attractive starting price of around USD 60,000 for the AWD model, Munich may have a potential segment winner in the U.S.
