VW Group’s U.S. pickup truck comes in EV & EREV flavors

The Scout Terra, an electrified crew cab pickup, will spearhead the return of Scout Motors to the American utility vehicle market. Here’s the latest, and our expectations from the future electrified truck, which will be sold alongside the Scout Traveler SUV.

Why Scout?

When Volkswagen Group acquired Navistar in 2021, it inherited the rights to the iconic Scout brand (International Harvester Scout). Before that, for about five years, the company sought an entry in the pickup truck segment in America, showcasing two concept models. In 2021, it sensed an opportunity with the badge that reminds people of the country’s first off-road SUV, former CEO Dr. Herbert Diess told TechCrunch in an interview (via YouTube).

Volkswagen Group has established Scout Motors independent of the Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA). Scout Motors reports directly to headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany. Scott Keogh, previously the President and CEO of VWGoA and the CEO of Volkswagen North American Region, was appointed President and CEO of Scout Motors since September 1, 2022.

Exterior

The Terra puts on a confident stance with upright proportions and sculpted surfaces. At the front, a vertical black mask frames slim horizontal DRLs that extend to the sides, recalling the original Scout II. A flat, high-set hood with character lines across the fender brings definition to the fascia, while a tight front overhang and separated bumper should help approach and departure angles.

In profile, upright windows and squared pillars highlight its boxy silhouette, while straight surfaces along the doors create a neat look. Dual-tone finishes, pronounced arches with special off-road tires mounted on machined black alloy wheels add to the off-road design.

The rear features a 5.5-foot cargo bed with integrated lighting, two 120-volt outlets, and a 240-volt outlet. These improve the truck’s utility by supporting power tools, electrical appliances, and camping gear. An underbody carrier accommodates a 33-inch spare, with an option for an in-bed mount for 35-inch tires.

Functional details include recovery points, rocker protection, and a split tailgate with weather shielding. The Harvester-branded charging flap nods to Scout’s history.

Interior

Inside, the Terra reflects Scout’s commitment to keep the user experience mechanical and intuitive. A wide digital display is balanced by physical toggle switches and knobs for climate and drive functions. Overhead toggles manage off-road systems such as lockers and sway bar disconnects.

The squared steering wheel with red stitching and wood inlays give the cabin a premium look, and a two-tone scheme with light headrests adds contrast. U.S. customers can choose between a multifunctional console or a bench seat. Large glass panels, including a panoramic roof and the Cabana Top option, should create an open cabin. The interior offers multiple USB-C ports, household outlets, and configurable storage.

The truck’s electronic systems run on a zonal software architecture developed through the Volkswagen-Rivian joint venture, enabling over-the-air updates, remote diagnostics, and lifecycle management. The Scout Community UX builds on this foundation with customizable digital features and high-res camera support.

Specifications

The Scout Terra is built on a body-on-frame chassis. It delivers more than 10,000 pounds of towing capacity and close to 2,000 pounds of payload. A four-wheel-drive system with an electric drive unit at each axle produces an estimated 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque, enabling 0-60 mph acceleration in just 3.5 seconds.

Fully electric models are projected to achieve up to 350 miles of range. They use an 800-volt system, support charging at up to 350 kW, and feature bi-directional capability through the North American Charging Standard (NACS).

Range-extended (EREV) variants employ the proprietary Harvester system. A naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine, mounted just ahead of the rear axle, recharges the battery to extend total range beyond 500 miles. Keogh described this engine on a MotorTrend podcast as a “small,” industrialized unit for the U.S. market, suggesting it may be a derivative of Volkswagen’s 1.5- or 2.0-liter engines without turbocharging.

Off-road specifications include support for 35-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, more than a foot of ground clearance, close to three feet of water fording ability, competitive approach and departure angles, a front sway bar disconnect, and mechanical lockers at both axles.

Production

The Scout Terra will be manufactured at the new Scout Motors Production Center in Blythewood, South Carolina. The facility is spread across roughly 1,600 acres, with about 1,100 acres dedicated to vehicle and battery assembly.

Designed for an annual capacity of more than 200,000 vehicles, the plant represents an investment of USD 2 billion by Volkswagen Group. Construction is progressing, with production scheduled to begin in 2027. Scout expects to create more than 4,000 permanent jobs at the site once operations ramp up.

Price & Release Date

The Scout Terra’s prices will start at just under USD 60,000, and we expect deliveries to commence in the second half of 2027.

Right-Hand Drive

The Scout electric pickup truck could also be launched in right-hand drive countries like Australia and New Zealand. In a conversation with reporters at IAA 2025, Keogh said that Scout Motors will evaluate the Terra for Australia and other markets after the U.S. and Canada launch, news.com.au reported on September 9, 2025.

TopElectricSUV says

The Scout truck has the potential to be the next American workhorse. It is ideal for customers who spend most of their time outdoors and in worksites with challenging terrain. While it won’t come cheap, it will certainly be significantly more affordable than the GMC Hummer EV Pickup that only a few can dream of owning.
