Subaru introduced a hybrid powertrain on two models in the U.S. in quick succession in 2025, the Forester and the Crosstrek, but its largest model wasn’t among them. A Subaru Ascent Hybrid is unlikely to be released in 2026 or 2027, but it does appear to be in the pipeline.
Subaru Ascent Hybrid needs a larger powertrain
In an earlier conversation with MotorTrend, Alan Bethke, the senior vice president of marketing at Subaru (U.S.), said that the company is working on plans for a hybrid system for its larger SUVs, the Ascent and Outback.
Bethke did not delve into the specifics, but it seems obvious that the company needs to develop a bigger powertrain to suit the demands of the two models.

The Crosstrek Hybrid and Forester Hybrid share a 2.5-liter Boxer engine-based hybrid system that produces 194 horsepower, and that may be deemed insufficient by U.S. buyers for the Ascent, given that it’s a large three-row SUV designed to seat up to eight people and a packed cargo hold.
We think Subaru could either develop a new in-house hybrid system tailored for larger models, or adapt Toyota’s THS or Hybrid Max powertrain for its applications. Either way, we expect an electrified option in the next-gen Ascent which should reach dealers toward the end of the decade.
Design
The 2026 Subaru Ascent has a bold and powerful exterior that blends proper SUV attributes with crossover styling. At the front, it features a tall radiator grille and aggressive headlamps, a compact lower air intake, and a muscular bumper, making it immediately recognizable as a Subaru.

Gray wheel arch claddings and rocker panels, raised roof rails, and 20-inch wheels give the 2026 Ascent a rugged stance on the sides. At the rear, the three-row SUV features a raked windshield, C-shaped combination lamps, and dual exhaust tailpipes.
Interior
The 2026 Subaru Ascent features a simple interior that lacks the aesthetic appeal of most of its rivals. Its dashboard has the heft we’d expect on a typical SUV, and the vertical AC vents on the flanks of the central touchscreen and the regular steering wheel with thick spokes and a flat center pad reinforce its SUV credentials.
Subaru uses an analog speedo and tachometer in the 2026 Ascent, something purists would appreciate for long-term reliability. The 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system’s UI looks outdated, but thankfully, it comes with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both operable wirelessly.

12-way power driver’s seat with two-position memory and a heating function, 4-way power front passenger seat with a heating function, heated second-row seats, heated steering wheel, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system are some of the key features of the 2026 Ascent’s interior.
On the safety front, Subaru offers Pre-Collision Braking System, Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Departure Prevention, and a range of other advanced driver assistance systems.
Experience in the 2026 Ascent
Front-door access in the 2026 Subaru Ascent is easy due to wide-opening doors. The front seats feel notably more comfortable than the smaller Subarus, with strong back support, generous under-thigh support, and supportive side bolstering.
Shoulder support is very good, and the adjustable headrests improve comfort. Headroom is adequate for a six-footer. The dashboard uses soft-touch surfaces and visible top-stitching that create a more premium impression.

Second-row entry is also easy. With the front seat set for a six-footer, knee room is decent, and size 12 shoes can slide under the front seat, improving foot space. The second-row floor is close to flat, helping movement across the cabin. The seating position creates a slight knee-up posture despite the available space.
The second-row seats slide fore and aft, allowing occupants to prioritize either legroom or third-row access. Rear passengers receive two USB-C ports, a dedicated rear climate control panel, and seat heating.
Roof-mounted vents improve airflow distribution to rear occupants. Headroom remains adequate, and shoulder and under-thigh support feel comparable to the front seats.

Third-row access requires significant effort with the second-row seats in place. Even with a recline function, the third row does not accommodate two six-footers seated back-to-back, limiting it to kids in typical use. With the third row in place, the cargo area still provides room for luggage and suitcases.

The gas-powered 2026 Subaru Ascent’s prices range from USD 40,795 to USD 51,995, excluding USD 1,450 destination and delivery charges. We expect the Ascent Hybrid to land in the USD 45,000 to USD 55,000 range when it goes on sale eventually.
