BMW Alpina unveils new logo – comfort performance brand to sit below Rolls-Royce, retain 20-spoke wheels

The new BMW Alpina sub-brand has released a trickle of information since the beginning of the year, when BMW took the marque over from the Bovensiepen family. Having already shown its wordmark, the company has now revealed the logo that will adorn a new range of high-performance vehicles.

Featuring a version of Alpina’s original asymmetric typeface, the roundel is still recognisable but has been simplified and sharpened up. The red and blue shield is gone, and while the throttle bodies and crankshaft remain, their designs have been made more abstract – not surprising, given that future models are expected to come with at least some form of electrification.

As previously intimated, the new lineup will occupy a unique space in the marketplace by combining high performance with a comfortable ride, just like previous cars from Buchloe tuner – and quite unlike the harder-edged, motorsport-inspired character of Munich’s own M cars.

This will be combined with an evolution of the brand’s signature design cues, such as intricate 20-spoke alloy wheels, a subtle exterior colour palette and “superior quality leather” available in a dizzying array of colours. Personalisation will be a key focus of the new Alpina brand, BMW said.

Also confirmed is the shift to building Alpina models entirely within BMW’s manufacturing facilities, instead of the cars being shipped to Buchloe for bespoke modifications and interior trimmings. The small Bavarian town now instead houses Alpina Classic, which looks after older cars.

No other details have been released so far, but the first new-age Alpina model is expected to appear sometime this year, Autocar reported. It will sit above the brand’s mainstream cars in the “Luxury Layer”, below Rolls-Royce.

Meanwhile, the Bovensiepen family has already moved on, having formed an eponymous brand – also based in Buchloe – and developed a new BMW M4-based model designed by Zagato.
