Hyundai Stops Sales on SUV After Young US Girl Killed By Electric Seats

A fatal rear-seat incident has triggered a stop-sale on certain 2026 Hyundai SUVs, as the automaker rushes out an interim fix and warns owners to use extreme caution

Hyundai has officially issued a strict stop-sale on certain 2026 Palisade SUVs. This comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Ohio, where a two-year-old child lost her life after being crushed by the vehicle’s power-folding rear seats.

The issue comes in the form of the Palisade’s power-operated second and third-row seats. According to the marque, the safety sensors embedded in these seats may completely fail to detect when an object, or even a person, is obstructing their path.

This failure happens when the seat is folding, sliding, or when the second-row’s one-touch tilt-and-slide access function is used. Because the system’s jam-prevention sensors don’t properly register the obstruction, the heavy seat motors continue to force the seats down and forward.

Tragically, this issue resulted in the death of a young girl on March 7, 2026. Following the incident, Hyundai immediately halted sales to investigate the root cause and develop a permanent fix.

Which Models Are Affected?

Not every Palisade on the road is subject to this stop-sale. The defect is isolated specifically to models equipped with power-folding rear seats. Here is the breakdown of the affected vehicles:

  • The Vehicle: 2026 Hyundai Palisade.
  • The Trims: Specifically the premium Limited and Calligraphy trims.
  • The Scope: Approximately 68,500 vehicles are impacted, including roughly 60,500 in the United States and another 8,000 in Canada.

Note: If you own a lower trim Palisade that utilizes manual levers to fold and slide the rear seats, your vehicle is not affected by this specific issue.

What Hyundai is Doing Now

Hyundai is taking steps to keep current owners safe while preventing any further defective models from reaching consumer driveways.

  • The Stop-Sale: Dealers are legally prohibited from selling any new 2026 Limited or Calligraphy Palisades until a permanent safety fix is implemented.
  • Interim Software Update: While engineers work on a physical remedy, Hyundai is developing an over-the-air software update expected to roll out by the end of March 2026. This patch is designed to temporarily increase the sensitivity of the contact sensors as an emergency safeguard.
  • Permanent Recall: A formal, mandatory recall is currently being finalized with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A permanent mechanical or software fix is still in development and will eventually be performed at local dealerships entirely free of charge.
  • Free Rentals: Understanding the severe safety risk, Hyundai is offering free rental vehicles through their dealership network for any current owners who do not feel comfortable driving their Palisade until the permanent fix is applied.

An Urgent Warning for Current Owners

If you currently own a 2026 Palisade Limited or Calligraphy, Hyundai strongly urges you to exercise extreme caution. Owners must strictly ensure that no one, especially a child or a pet, is anywhere near the seats before pressing any of the power-folding buttons.

Owners should also actively avoid pressing the second-row seatback button while passengers are in the process of climbing into or out of the third row. Until the permanent NHTSA recall is completed, treating these automated buttons with the utmost caution is the only way to ensure your family’s safety.
