Festival of Speed: A Must-See Motoring Event

Share

Every summer, the rolling parkland of Goodwood House becomes the centre of the motoring universe with the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which blends history, speed and spectacle in a way few events can match.

For four days, the famous hillclimb hosts rare racing machines, iconic drivers and groundbreaking new cars. Meanwhile, fans get closer to the action than almost anywhere else in motorsport.

The 2026 edition promises to be especially memorable. A brand-new interactive area will debut. Historic rivalries will return to the spotlight. Several major anniversaries will also be marked.

Here are five standout moments to look forward to at the 2026 Festival of Speed.

1. A New Level of Interaction: The FOS Fan Zone

The biggest addition for 2026 is the brand-new FOS Fan Zone. This dedicated space aims to bring visitors closer to the personalities and stories that shape motorsport.

Throughout the four-day event, the Fan Zone stage will host:

  • Driver Q&A sessions
  • Live podcasts and interviews
  • Panel discussions with engineers, designers and racing insiders

As a result, fans can gain insights into how teams operate at the highest level of competition.

However, the experience is not limited to listening and watching.

Visitors can also:

  • Try professional-grade racing simulators
  • Capture unique photo opportunities
  • Purchase exclusive Festival merchandise

Better still, access to the Fan Zone is included with a standard Festival ticket. Therefore, it is likely to become one of the busiest areas on site.

For many visitors, it may well become the social heart of the event.

2. “The Rivals”: Legendary Motorsport Duels Return

Each year the Festival of Speed revolves around a central theme. For 2026, the spotlight falls on “The Rivals – Epic Racing Duels.”

Motorsport thrives on competition. Some rivalries have defined entire eras of racing. Consequently, the Festival will celebrate several of the most intense showdowns in motorsport history.

Two anniversaries sit at the centre of this year’s programme.

The 1966 Le Mans Showdown

The 2026 Festival marks 60 years since the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. That race saw Ford Motor Company defeat Ferrari after years of fierce competition.

The result was dramatic. Ford’s GT MkII racers claimed a historic 1-2-3 finish.

At Goodwood, the three victorious cars will reunite for a rare hillclimb demonstration. For motorsport historians, it is a moment not to miss.

Hunt vs Lauda: Formula 1’s Most Dramatic Season

Another highlight marks 50 years since James Hunt claimed the Formula 1 title in 1976.

His fierce battle with Niki Lauda remains one of the sport’s most gripping seasons.

Their rivalry included:

  • Lauda’s near-fatal Nürburgring crash
  • His astonishing return weeks later
  • A dramatic championship finale in Japan

Expect cars, stories and tributes from that unforgettable campaign to feature prominently throughout the Festival.

3. Honouring Motorcycle Legend Barry Sheene

The Festival will also celebrate one of Britain’s most charismatic racing champions: Barry Sheene.

Goodwood’s tribute to Sheene spans all three major motorsport events held on the estate during the year. The Festival of Speed will focus on the machines that carried him to global fame.

Sheene’s career highlights include:

  • Two world championships
  • 23 Grand Prix victories
  • A reputation as one of the sport’s most engaging personalities

At Goodwood, around ten of Sheene’s most important motorcycles will tackle the hillclimb across the weekend.

There is also a personal connection. Sheene himself drove up the Goodwood Hill during the 2000 Festival of Speed.

Seeing the bikes that defined his career return to the same course promises to be a powerful tribute.

4. Damon Hill’s Championship Anniversary

Another milestone arrives in 2026. It marks 30 years since Damon Hill secured the 1996 Formula One title.

Hill’s journey to the top of the sport was far from conventional.

Unlike most drivers, he began racing relatively late. His early focus was on motorcycles before switching to cars in his mid-twenties. Yet within a decade he reached the pinnacle of Formula One.

Driving for Williams Racing, Hill captured the championship at the 1996 Japanese Grand Prix.

That victory carried extra emotional weight. Hill became the first son of a world champion to claim the same honour, following in the footsteps of his father, Graham Hill.

At the Festival of Speed:

  • Damon Hill will appear on the Goodwood Balcony on Saturday
  • Fans will hear stories from his championship year
  • He will also drive on the hillclimb during the event

The exact car he will drive has yet to be announced. Nevertheless, anticipation is already building.

5. Singer Takes Centre Stage

Every year, the Festival of Speed unveils a striking sculpture in front of Goodwood House. Known as the Central Feature, it celebrates a brand or theme that has shaped automotive culture.

For 2026, the honour goes to Singer Vehicle Design.

Founded in 2009, Singer has earned global recognition for its meticulous reinterpretations of classic Porsche models.

Rather than simple restorations, Singer cars combine vintage design with modern engineering. The goal is to create a version of a classic Porsche that feels both authentic and contemporary.

The Festival of Speed has hosted several Singer debuts over the years. Therefore, the company’s selection as Central Feature marque reflects a long-standing connection with Goodwood.

The sculpture itself is designed by renowned artist Gerry Judah. His previous Goodwood installations have become landmarks in their own right.

As always, the design remains secret until the Festival opens. Yet if past sculptures are any guide, it will dominate the skyline above Goodwood House.
