One of the great things about cars is that they can be fun in so many ways. A coupe with a powerful engine under the hood, such as a Ford Mustang GT, is a hoot and a half. But as the Mazda MX-5 Miata has shown, a small-displacement car with a cloth top can be enjoyable in its own ways. Our Pick of the Day offers that kind of driving pleasure. You can find this 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce listed on ClassicCars.com by a dealership in Huntington Station, New York. It comes with its original books and tools, tan top boot, and ownership and service history.
Maybe I’ve watched too many movies, but there’s something so appealing about the idea of zipping around in the sunshine in a red Alfa Romeo, especially with my wife next to me, her hair blowing in the wind. It’s hard to see an Italian car, especially a red one, and not think about romantic getaways (I cheered my wife up after a bad day with a surprise trip to get gelato in a 2017 Fiat 124 Spider, but it wasn’t quite the same).

This Alfa looks like the perfect car for a romantic getaway. As a Series 4 model, it’s not quite as curvy as the earlier generations, but this Pininfarina-styled Alfa Red rag-top still looks great with its recessed headlights, slim profile, and sloped rear end, which features nicely integrated bar taillights and an inboard single exhaust outlet. And let’s not forget the 15-inch phone dial-like wheels.

A black soft top with a plastic rear window covers the two-seat cabin furnished with tan leather and light brown suede bucket seats. Despite this car’s relative simplicity, it comes equipped with the features you’d expect in a ’90s car: an airbag, air conditioning, power steering, power windows, and power disc brakes. One thing you probably don’t expect to see in a car of this age is an odometer with only 57,435 miles on it.

Alfa offered the Spider with a three-speed automatic, but this one has a five-speed manual topped with a handsome wood knob. Sure, the 2.0-liter DOHC I-4 under the hood won’t get you to that picnic spot or idyllic B&B quickly, but romantic drives are meant to be savored, not rushed.
You and your significant other can get cruising in this 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce for $23,500. Just be sure to lock it in now before the weather gets too hot.
