Best of the 1960s? 1968 Dodge Charger R/T

Quick! What’s the best American design of the 1960s? Traditionalists would say the 1963 Buick Riviera or Chevrolet Corvette from the same year, but muscle car fans may submit the 1968 Dodge Charger. The best? Arguable. Worthy of consideration? Absolutely!

Though a certain 9 p.m. (8:00 Central!) television show may have steered some (moi!) towards the 1969, it’s the ’68 that has everyone waxing poetic. The exhaust-inspired taillights, in particular, is what many enthusiasts like, though I also believe it was the first one that the world saw, which imprinted itself onto the minds of men and women in America and beyond — that goes a long way, doesn’t it?

Engine choices were much more varied than what you’d expect for a “Specialty Car” like the muscular Charger: You could go with the Charger 6 and select the 225ci “Slant Six” or go with the Charger 8 and select among a 318 two-barrel, 383 two-barrel, 383 four-barrel, or the Charger R/T-specific 440 Magnum or 426 Hemi.

Muscle Car Campy caught up with Pete Romano and his 1968 Charger R/T. The Medium Green metallic Mopar features the standard 375-horsepower 440, black vinyl top, white “Bumblebee” stripe, steel road wheels, and more.
