Yozma IN10 Review: $1200 somehow buys a 40mph ultra-capable mini electric dirtbike

Every kid between 12 and 16 wants a Sur Ron-type Emoto this summer. The market has exploded to match that demand — and for riders on the smaller end of the size and budget spectrum, it’s hard to beat the Yozma IN10.

First, let’s get the spec sheet out:

  • 2.6kW mid-drive brushless motor, 146nm torque
  • 48V 23.4Ah Lithium battery (1.123 kWh)
  • 40mph top speed, 53 Mile stated range (35 for both IRL)
  • 52V 5A (256W) Charger, Charging Time 0%-100% 6 Hours
  • Hydraulic brakes 190mm heavy-duty
  • Suitable Height: 3.94ft – 5.9ft, Weight: Up to 265 lbs
  • Dual adjustable hydraulic suspension
  • Frame: High Carbon Steel, total weight: 121 lbs
  • IPX6 waterproof
  • Mullet Tire 14”/12”
  • Price: $1199 at YozmaSport or Amazon

I’m still scratching my head at how a 40mph eMoto now costs the same as a decent commuter e-bike. There’s a whole other story to write about what this means for urban mobility — but I’ll save that for another day.

Yozma wasn’t the first E-moto to hit the near $1000 price point. Tuttio has been on the scene for a few years, selling its slower 2kW Soliel eBikes on Amazon. The Tuttios are a boxier-looking Emoto with reviewers noting some significant initial problems including complicated assembly.

Yozma, on the other hand, has garnered a cult-like following of pre-teens and teens who often, admittedly, use these illegally on the street for rideouts and wheelie debachery. The Yozma IN10 is specifically meant for off-road usage – note those very nobby tires and lack of rear lighting – so don’t blame the company if every teen in your neighborhood is riding these on city streets in a few years.

The chassis is a high-carbon steel frame mated to a fully hydraulic suspension system front and rear, featuring a nitrogen-charged and adjustable rear shock. Big hydraulic disc brakes provide strong stopping power, while 14-inch front and 12-inch rear wheels are wrapped in fat, knobby tires.

Note that Yozma and others offer a ‘Yozma ‘Electric Dirt Bike Street Tire Set’ which won’t magically make the bike street legal but will make this more efficient and better handling on pavement.

On the trail, on the real

The 2,600W motor handles steep inclines up to 30 degrees, and in practice, the power delivery feels immediate and linear — no weird lag, no hesitation off the throttle. Three riding modes cap out at 18, 24, and 40 mph, respectively. IRL, 40mph requires a lot of lead time, and the motor usually tops out at 35 in a few seconds. This bike is clearly geared for higher torque and lower top speeds.

Yozma says, and I can confirm that this bike can climb 30-degree hills, but that’s with my 140lb kid. I noticed that my 200lb frame was really feeling the edge of the torque curve going up steep hills. Again, this is a $1200 electric dirt bike so I’m not expecting the world. This certainly beats hub-motor options even at over 3kW.

Suspension is surprisingly good for a bike at this price point but I would definitely consider something with suspension that would cost more than this whole bike for more challenging trails. I did bottom out a few times, but the adjustable suspension can be dialed in for heavier riders up to 265 lbs. My 140lb son was hopping over bumps like a jackrabbit.

Range is somehow both surprising and a letdown. Yozma says 53 miles and I don’t think that’s attainable even at some very slow speeds with a 1.1kWh battery. But I can see getting over 35 miles, even with some spirited riding. My son and I spent hours and outs on the trails with this thing and it barely moved the voltage-based battery indicator. The 5A charger will take this thing from 0-100% battery in about 6 hours which is a bit of a letdown. It will be interesting to see if 3rd parties develop faster charging options. Again, this is a $1200 eMoto and these are the right places to cut costs.

Where Yozma didn’t cut costs is the braking. The big, thick 190mm discs bring the bike to a halt quickly with the hydraulic brakes. Together with that bright front light, I think I would have made all of the same trade-offs to keep this bike under $1200.

Enterprising parents and kids can pick up a $25 bluetooth dongle at Amazon to adjust top speed, regen, and a host of other variables in the motor. Some parents may want to reduce the top speed to 30mph or under, for instance, especially as the kid gets used to the bike.

Electrek’s take

What a time to be alive and what a time to be a dad of a young teenager. Putting my son on a fun, environmentally conscious eMoto that has safety built in is fantastic.

For $1200, the price of a low to midrange ebike and a midrange mountain bike, he’s got a rechargeable off-road fun machine that takes him to the neighbors’ house, to the track, and all over.

Sure, kids are going to use these on roads illegally, and it is up to the parents and jurisdiction to decide how to handle and enforce laws that exist for the safety of the kids riding these and other people on the roads. I’m not here to have that debate.

But for riding on the trails, and with a $1200 budget, the Yozma IN10 is unstoppable.
