BMW X6 Electric (BMW iX6) expected in 2028 with Neue Klasse looks & tech

Share

BMW has said that it will offer electrified variants in all segments this decade, and BimmerPost forum member ynguldyn suggests that the BMW iX6 will be a conversion of the fourth-gen X6 (G66). The person familiar with BMW’s plans yet to be made public claims that the iX6 will share the CLAR platform with the next-gen X6.

Here’s everything we know, and our general expectations from the first-ever BMW iX6.

Design

The BMW iX6 should carry the familiar ‘SAC’ DNA for a confident and commanding look. Customers love the muscular yet dynamic character of the X6, and it’s logical to expect the iX6 to match its striking design.

The BMW iX6 (rendered) should come with 23-inch wheels to give it a commanding stance. The sporty roofline will be its USP.

As seen in our renderings, the BMW iX6 should incorporate the brand’s future design language that debuted on the second-gen iX3.

Slim, vertically oriented BMW kidney elements in a gloss black finish should be embedded within a wide, darkened fascia panel. This panel would incorporate a smoked lens effect and gloss black trim, visually linking the lighting elements while maintaining a clean, continuous surface.

The DRLs would form a multi-part signature, extending outward into sharp, fang-like elements and inward as a series of closely spaced vertical light segments that collectively create a horizontal band toward the BMW kidneys, which would be adorned by Iconic Glow surround lights.

Like the iX5 and i7, the BMW iX6 should ride on the CLAR platform that is also designed for combustion vehicles. Current X6 pictured for reference.

A wide air intake grille in the center of the lower bumper would serve the cooling needs of the core components like the battery pack and powertrain. Its design will likely vary as per the equipment line.

The side profile would give the exterior a monolithic look with tight panel gaps, and minimalist use of character lines. Instead of conventional door handles, BMW should use winglets integrated directly into the beltline, aligning with the base of the windows.

At the rear, we expect to see slim and wide combination lamps with intricate detailing and a sporty roof spoiler.

Interior

The first-ever BMW iX6 should feature a highly digital and uncluttered interior. The dashboard will likely have a layered architecture and form a visual connection with the front door panels. The steering wheel should carry the new four-spoke design.

BMW Panoramic Vision

BMW Panoramic Vision, a new projection system, should display information across the bottom of the windscreen, presenting key driving statistics on the driver’s side, with this segment serving as a replacement for an instrument cluster.

The dashboard of the BMW iX6 will likely integrate three projectors for the BMW Panoramic Vision feature.

A regular 3D head-up display should be available as an option, though. The content in the center and on the front of the passenger side will likely be customizable.

BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Passenger Screen

Twin parallelogram-shaped touch-operated displays, including a 17.9-inch BMW Panoramic iDrive unit in the center and a 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Screen on the front of the passenger, will likely be positioned on the middle layer of the dashboard. The former should feature matrix backlight technology and have a resolution of 3340 x1440 pixels.

The BMW Passenger Screen should be a full-HD panel and allow the front passenger to watch videos, play games, and, along with the interior camera, attend video conferences.

Comfort features

BMW should equip the iX6 with an array of comfort features. The front seats should include power adjustment, massage, memory, and heating functions. The steering wheel, rear seat, and front and rear center consoles should also have a heating function.

A four-zone automatic climate control system and a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic shading will likely also be among the equipment highlights in this aspect. That said, we don’t expect space levels to go up considerably over the current vehicle.

Specifications

Conversion-type BEV on the CLAR platform

BMW has plotted a range of bespoke EVs under the new Neue Klasse family starting in 2025, focusing on mid-size models such as the next-gen BMW iX3, BMW iX4, and the BMW 3 Series Electric. In contrast, the iX6 would be a simpler offering sitting on a modified version of the company’s rear-wheel drive ICE vehicle platform.

6th gen eDrive technology

As per the information on Bimmerpost, while it won’t benefit from the new EV-exclusive platform developed for the Neue Klasse models, it should get the sixth-gen eDrive technology. BMW has followed this approach for the CLAR-based facelifted i7 as well.

The BMW X6 Electric should come with a large battery pack consisting of the new BMW round lithium-ion cells. Compared to the prismatic lithium-ion cells used in the battery packs of older BMW EVs, these will have a higher nickel content and lower cobalt content on the cathode side and also an increased silicon content on the anode side. Their volumetric energy density will be 20% higher.

Variants and Performance

BMW may offer the iX6 exclusively in AWD variants, with an asynchronous motor (ASM) on the front axle and an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) at the rear. The company will likely present a choice of three variants: 50 xDrive, 60 xDrive, and M70 xDrive, with 449 hp and 487 lb.-ft. of torque, 536 hp and 549 lb.-ft. of torque, and 671 hp and 811 lb.-ft. of torque, respectively.

The BMW iX6 (rendered) will likely hit 0 to 60 mph in just around 3.5 seconds. The U.S., China, and the Middle East should be the big markets for the all-electric SUV-Coupe.

The iX6 may accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just under 5.0 seconds in the 50 xDrive variant, less than 4.5 seconds in the 60 xDrive variant, and around 3.5 seconds in the M70 xDrive variant. The top speed will likely be electronically limited to 124 mph in the 50 xDrive and 60 xDrive variants and 155 mph in the M70 xDrive variant.

Range & Charging

According to a report THAT BMW Blog published on April 9, 2026, BMW will use a smaller battery pack in the 50 xDrive variant and a larger unit in the 60 xDrive and M70 xDrive variants. We expect both to consist NMC cells and the latter to have an energy storage capacity of around 110 kWh.

The highest charging power could be around 250 kW, allowing a 10-80% DC fast-charge session in just about 25 minutes. On a full charge, the larger battery pack should be able to give the iX6 xDrive 60 an EPA-est. range of around 350 miles.

Production

Production of the BMW iX6 should take place at the BMW Group Spartanburg Plant. The seven million-square-foot facility, located in Greer (South Carolina), USA, is getting a billion-dollar infusion to support the production of electric vehicles. Plus, a one-million-square-foot in-house battery assembly facility will spring up just 16 miles away in Woodruff (South Carolina) with a USD 700 million investment.

By 2030, no less than six pure-electric BMW models will roll off the assembly line at the Spartanburg plant. The BMW Blog report says that production of the BMW iX6 will commence in Spring-Summer 2028.

Price & Release Date

The X6 opened up a whole new segment in the industry and has long been the company’s wild child in the X line-up. The X6 EV derived from it will likely be sleeker, and quicker off the line.

We expect the U.S. launch of the BMW iX6 take place in mid-2028, with prices starting at around USD 90,000.
