Range Rover Velar-style Electric SUV to launch “quickly after” the Jaguar Type 01

The Range Rover Velar, which was introduced in 2017, may not have impressed the market much, especially compared to other members in the Range Rover family. Land Rover is working on an all-new electric model to step up the game, and it is expected to replace the Velar.

While the branding will be confirmed this year, here’s what we know about the third all-electric Land Rover that follows the Range Rover BEV and Range Rover Sport BEV in 2027.

During Jaguar Land Rover’s Investor Day 2025 event, Martin Limpert, the Global Managing Director of the Range Rover brand, presented an overview of the successes in the last year.

While he didn’t offer details of the incoming electric Velar or confirm the EV, one image in the success slide showed three prototypes under the heading “First EMA prototypes begin hot and cold testing.”

While the prototype on the left is the Defender Sport/Defender 80 EV, the test mule in the middle is unmistakably the future Velar EV.

So you see we’re moving the brands or the products within the Range Rover brand further apart to create spaces and talk to different target audiences as well. We do the same with Velar and Evoque.

Radical Design

The Range Rover Velar-like model is set to come across as polarizing, with an extreme coupe-like shape. Prototype sightings suggest it will retain a familiar Range Rover face, with a clamshell hood, slim horizontal wraparound headlamps, and pronounced outer corners and fenders.

However, designers have flipped the script on the side. As shown in the images shared by our friend Wilco, the roofline drops sharply after the B-pillar and leaves little room for a rear window. The shape brings to mind the Tesla Cybertruck’s wedge-like silhouette, and it looks aimed at owner-drivers, not chauffeur duty.

Like other Range Rover, expect the sleek body to be complemented with razor-thin shut lines and flush glazing.

Minimalist Interior

Inside, expect a familiar minimalist theme with a tall yet elegantly designed dashboard with neatly integrated air vents, a customizable virtual instrument cluster, and a floating touchscreen infotainment system.

Physical controls like buttons, knobs, and switches should be restricted to the bare minimum, and the gear selector might be integrated into a steering stalk to free up space in the center console for additional storage.

Generously used soft-touch materials, softly lit ambient lighting, a flat floor, and wide multifunction seats with massage and climate functions should give the occupants an experience similar to a modern living space.

Enhanced Connectivity Features

JLR has partnered with Tata Communications and should equip the upcoming SUV with advanced connectivity powered by the Tata Communications MOVE platform.

With data exchange exceeding 2.5 terabytes daily, JLR will deliver quicker diagnostics, improved vehicle maintenance, and seamless media streaming.

The MOVE platform is expected to provide reliable vehicle tracking in the toughest environments, frequent over-the-air software updates for improved diagnostics, seamless access to preferred applications and features worldwide, and hassle-free connectivity plans through a single provider.

Battery & Charging

The Range Rover Velar-like electric SUV will be the first Land Rover to use the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), a dedicated EV platform developed for midsize SUVs. It will have a module-less battery pack that is more cost-effective and lower in weight than a typical battery pack.

The new electric SUV will be able to take advantage of 800-volt ultra-fast chargers, allowing customers to charge its battery pack from 10 to 80% as quickly as around 20 minutes.

Range & Features

There’s no word on how far or how quickly the electric SUV from the Range Rover family will drive, but it’s safe to assume that it would deliver an EPA-estimated range of at least 300 miles, and zip from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds in higher configurations. Level 2+ autonomous features should allow drivers to cruise hands-free on compatible highways.

JLR confirmed during its Investor Day in 2021 that it is engineering EMA drive units to deliver 92% efficiency, enabling a range of 4-4.5 miles for every kWh of battery capacity.

Release Date & Price

The reveal of the Velar-style EV no longer looks likely in 2027. PB Balaji, JLR’s CEO, said that the company has “three reveals coming during the second half of this year.” Understandably, he must be referring to the Range Rover BEV, Range Rover Sport BEV, and the Type 01.

The company could launch the Velar-style EV by early 2027, based on what Richard Molyneux, JLR’s CFO, hinted during Tata Motors’ Q3 FY26 earnings call. It’s realistic to expect the third Range Rover EV to reach production in the first half of next year.

Range Rover Electric, Range Rover Sport Electric will be the first into production, followed by the reveal of the production version of the new Jaguar Type 01. And quickly after that, the launch of the first EMA car, a Range Rover. I’ve driven all of these cars, and both the design and the engineering are staggeringly good.

JLR will manufacture the radical new Range Rover model at its Halewood plant in the UK, with further details to be revealed during the JLR Investor Day on June 17, 2026. If it is brought to the U.S., prices should start at around USD 70,000.

And finally, also unveil the first car off our EMA platform. That’s a unique new model from the Range Rover family that’s going to get built at Halewood. So we are approaching a really really busy launch period for JLR over the next couple of years. Again we’ll give you more details on timings, etc during the Investor Day.
