Royal provenance propels XJ40 Sovereign to fantastic result with online auctioneers The Market

A 1994 Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign once used by Princess Diana has been sold by online auction site The Market for £66,250.

Supplied new to the royal household in March 1994, the Jaguar is best known as the car from which Diana stepped wearing the famous ‘revenge dress’ at the Serpentine Gallery in June that year.

The 4.0-litre Sovereign is finished in green with a beige leather interior. Having covered just 45,331 miles, it was presented in largely original condition, retaining features including its Motorola carphone and royal security equipment. The car had entered private ownership after its royal service ended in 1997 and was carefully maintained, supported by a comprehensive service history and evidence of recent long-term dry storage.

While the XJ40 has become increasingly appreciated by enthusiasts in recent years, this example’s appeal lay as much in its provenance as its condition. The car’s connection to one of the most memorable moments of Diana’s public life elevated it from a well-preserved luxury saloon to a genuine piece of royal history.

Princess Diana’s affiliation has delivered big results at auction in the past too. In 2022, her personal 1985 Escort RS Turbo smashed records when it sold for £650,000, while her 1981 Escort Ghia fetched £52,000 the year before.
