AutoHunter Spotlight: 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Coupe

Share

The midsized Chevelle of the mid-to-late 1960s cemented its place in the muscle car movement. Leveraging the GM A-body platform, it seamlessly bridged the gap between the compact Nova and the larger Impala by wooing buyers with its “long hood, short deck” styling and high-horsepower engines. Featured on AutoHunter is a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Coupe listed for sale by a dealer in Asheboro, North Carolina.

For 1966, a Chevelle model that was built with an identification number beginning with the sequence “138” was a factory-produced Super Sport. Finished in Ermine White, the exterior of this true SS features quad headlights, chrome bumpers, hood scoops, dual side mirrors, rocker moldings, black vinyl top, Super Sport emblems, 14-inch wheels, and Goodyear Eagle white-letter tires.

The cabin features black vinyl upholstery, bucket seats, manual-crank windows, center console, AM/FM radio, wood-rimmed steering wheel, rubber floor mats, and trunk-mounted spare tire.

One of the magazine ads for the SS396 called the car, “More than just a straight-line machine.” It also said, “Personally, we don’t like the idea of a car that goes like a bird when the road’s like a ruler, and then turns chicken every time it has to change direction.” Some of the SS-specific features were listed thereafter, including (but not limited to) stiffer coil springs and shocks, a stiffer anti-sway bar up front, frame reinforcements out back, and 7.75 x 14 red-stripe tires.

Under the hood is a numbers-matching Turbo-Jet 396ci V-8 mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Features include a four-barrel carburetor and chrome valve covers.

Thanks to performance-oriented versions like the SS396, it’s no wonder the Chevelle built such a legendary reputation in the muscle car universe. You aren’t likely to see a car like this “White Lightning” strike again, so place your bid before the auction ends tomorrow. Also, be sure to check out the seller’s videos for a more in-depth look at the vehicle.

The auction for this 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Coupe ends Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. (PDT).
