Despite the recent shift in consumer preferences on the electrification front, BMW Group still plans to offer an EV in every segment it currently operates by 2030, with the goal of making more than half of its global sales tailpipe emissions-free.
As part of this strategy, the company will introduce a fully-electric BMW iX7, which we expect at U.S. dealers in 2027. Here’s everything that’s been reported, and our expectations for the full-size electrified SUV.
Design
BMW reportedly plans to launch the first-ever iX7 as a derivative of the second-generation X7 and has commenced road tests, revealing preliminary details about its exterior. The model is expected to feature large dimensions and familiar proportions, retaining its commanding presence.
As illustrated in our exclusive renderings in this article, the BMW iX7 should feature a covered kidney grille, split headlamps with a wide, ultra-slim DRL module positioned above a boxy low- and high-beam module, and a shorter functional grille at the bottom of the front apron.
The brand logo may sit in a dipped central area, which BMW refers to as the “valley” of the hood.
New 23-inch alloy wheels would complement the iX7’s proportions, adding to its stance. Instead of regular or flush handles, BMW is seen using winglets integrated into the door shoulders of test prototypes, leaving uninterrupted surfaces in the lower half of the panels. Inspired by the limited-run BMW Skytop roadster, this feature would add exclusivity to the design.
An upright rear is expected to maximize space and create a traditional SUV profile, with new combination lamps likely to emphasize both looks and technical sophistication.
Bi-color look
As per BMWBlog, the next-gen X7 is set to offer customers globally bi-tone exterior color options. We imagine that global buyers would be able to finish the upper body in contrasting shades for a small premium.
Interior
The BMW iX7 should upgrade to a premium interior with high-grade materials and the company’s latest comfort and convenience features. A slim dashboard and new display concepts may give the cabin a cleaner look, while a four-spoke steering wheel could establish visual continuity with the eccentric front design.
Features
Panoramic Vision & 3D HUD
Instead of a conventional instrument cluster, the iX7 should feature BMW Panoramic Vision, projecting content in three sections onto a black printed surface that stretches across the width of the lower windshield.
A new BMW 3D head-up display is also expected, presenting driving, navigation, and automated driving information further ahead, in the driver’s field of vision.
BMW iDrive X
The infotainment system may use a 17.9-inch parallelogram-shaped display with matrix backlight technology. Running BMW Operating System X, it should support Zoom, AirConsole, Disney+, YouTube, and other third-party apps.
Rear seat focus
While we expect advanced ambient lighting, and an 8K roof-mounted BMW Theatre Screen, a Bimmerpost forum post claims that soft close doors will come standard. Automatic doors, which electrically shuts the door when the brake pedal is applied, or when a button on the B-pillar is pressed, is also supposedly an optional feature.
ADAS
Advanced driver assistance systems are expected to be standard, supporting autonomous driving at speeds of up to 85 mph on compatible highways. The system may allow drivers to confirm lane changes with an eye signal by glancing at the respective ORVM.
BMW Alpina iX7 100
The BMW iX7 will have an Alpina variant BMW Blog reported on June 7, 2024. The BMW Alpina iX7 100 is expected to include a sportier exterior, a higher-quality interior with hand-crafted elements, additional amenities, a sport suspension, and a higher-output powertrain, which is likely to make it the most expensive BMW SUV.
It is not hard to imagine that BMW Alpina’s future X7s would have special rear seats, and may focus on being a luxurious two-row SUV.
Specifications
Platform & Variants
The iX7 will be based on a modified version of the CLAR platform and should launch exclusively in rear-biased dual-motor AWD variants, potentially in 50, 60, M70, and Alpina 100 configurations. BMW should use an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) in the rear and an asynchronous motor in the front, both free of permanent magnets.
Unlike the future iX3, iX4, and iX1, BMW is sticking with a conversion-type platform here because volumes are much lower for its larger SAVs. Combustion models should remain the main sellers for the X5, X6, and X7 lines.
Performance
According to a report BMW Blog published on May 10, 2025, the iX7 M70 may deliver over 800 hp, while the iX7 100 could approach 900 hp. The former may accelerate from 0-60 mph in a little over four seconds, while the latter could achieve the sprint in close to 3.5 seconds.
Charging & Range
A module-less battery pack with cylindrical NMC cells and a net capacity of about 120 kWh should power the motors. It should have an operating voltage of at least around 700 volts and support charging at 400 kW, going from 10% to 80% SoC in a little over 20 minutes. At full capacity, it will likely deliver a range of around 350 miles.
Production
Production of the iX7 is expected to be exclusively held at BMW’s plant in Greer (South Carolina), USA. The company plans to build no fewer than six EVs at this facility and has committed USD 1 billion for EV production preparations. Battery packs are expected to be supplied from a nearby in-house facility in Woodruff (South Carolina).
BMW is on track to roll out the first BEV from this facility in late 2026, which is expected as the BMW X5 electric (BMW iX5). It could well be that the X7 electric follows as the second model.
Price & Release Date
It also includes expenditure related to the development of NEUE KLASSE models such as the BMW iX3 and the successors to the BMW X5 and X7.

The BMW iX7, positioned above the X5 Electric, is expected to start at around USD 100,000, with the BMW Alpina iX7 100 approaching USD 200,000. BMW is likely to launch the new flagship electric model in late 2027, competing with the likes of the Range Rover Sport BEV and the Lucid Gravity.
