A Ford trailer module software issue has the automaker recalling approximately 4.38 million vehicles in the United States to address the defect that could disable critical trailer lighting and, in some cases, trailer brakes.

The safety recall covers certain 2021–2026 F-150, 2022–2026 Super Duty (F-250 through F-600), 2024–2026 Ranger, 2022–2026 Expedition, 2022–2026 Lincoln Navigator, 2022–2026 Maverick and 2026 Transit models.

What’s the Problem with Ford Trailer Module Software Issue?

According to Ford, the issue involves the trailer control module potentially losing communication with the vehicle, most often at startup. If the communication failure occurs while a trailer is connected, the trailer’s stop lamps and turn signals may not function.

On vehicles equipped with the “High series” trailer module, the malfunction may also disable the trailer’s braking function.

The condition places affected vehicles out of compliance with federal safety standards and could reduce driver control of a connected trailer while also making it less visible to surrounding traffic — increasing the risk of a crash.

Warning Signs for Drivers

If the module stops communicating, drivers may see several warning messages and indicators, including:

  • “Trailer Brake Module Fault” displayed in the instrument cluster
  • Rapidly flashing turn signal indicators
  • A possible “Blind Spot Assist System Fault” message

These alerts signal that the trailer’s lighting and, in some configurations, braking capability may be compromised.

No Reported Crashes or Injuries

Ford said it is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to the issue at this time.

Given the size of the recall — more than 4.3 million vehicles — it ranks among the larger software-related actions involving trailering systems in recent years, particularly affecting high-volume truck and SUV nameplates.

OTA Update Begins March 17

The fix involves a software update to the Integrated Trailer Module. Beginning March 17, most affected vehicles will be eligible to receive the update over-the-air (OTA). Customers may also have the update performed at a dealership or through Ford’s mobile service.

Ford expects OTA deployment to be completed across all affected vehicles by May.

Owners can check whether their vehicle is included by entering their VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls or through the FordPass app. Ford’s internal reference number for the recall is 26C10.
