Ongoing issues with certain 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra models rear-wheel lock up continue and GM has issued a voluntary recall.

Longtime readers of this site (not to mention the poor, put-upon owners of the actual vehicles) have been aware of this ongoing issue with the transmission and rear wheels of certain GM vehicles for a while. We first reported on the original recall in 2024, with additional reporting last year. Well, we have yet another update, and unfortunately it’s more bad news — for a select few, anyway.

GM issued a voluntary recall N252516560 last week to address incorrectly performed repairs on some of the vehicles affected by these previous recalls. That’s right — even if you thought you were safe after getting the fix, you may still be in danger of a potentially deadly highway-speed lockup! We reached out to GM’s global public policy communications lead Bill Grotz, who confirmed the recall and offered the following statement:

“General Motors is voluntarily recalling certain 2020 model year Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 and 2020 – 2022 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that were subject to an earlier recall and may not have received the correct transmission control module software update. Dealers will inspect the vehicles and, if necessary, install needed software. The safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team, and we’re working to remedy this matter as quickly as possible.”

Now, the good news is that fewer than 1,000 vehicles may be affected (out of 460K of the original recall). The bad news, of course, is that if you’re one of those “lucky” few, you’re still dealing with a life-threatening issue, even after getting it “fixed.” Our sincere condolences, and maybe reach out to GM/your dealer sooner rather than later if you may be affected — we want you safe, so you can keep reading our excellent articles.
