Update: ‘Target Markets’ updated with official teasers, and ‘Design’ section revised.
Like most global automakers, Hyundai has pursued a top-down approach in its transition to EVs. It began with bespoke models in larger segments, such as the Ioniq 6, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 9, where higher pricing can offset the cost of new technology, and global sales potential is greater. With those cars now at dealers, the brand is turning its attention to smaller dedicated EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 2.
Target Markets

Going by spy photos from South Korea, the Hyundai Ioniq 2 is an electric hatchback with a squared-off rear, primarily targeted at European countries. That said, it’s also likely to reach markets such as Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asian countries within the next few years as an entry-level Hyundai, where urban shoppers are looking for a compact and affordable electric option, or even a second car.
Design
Hyundai has released the initial teasers of the previewing design concept which is heading to IAA 2025 (2025 Munich Motor Show) that opens for the press on September 8, first reported by The Korea Times.
Images confirm features such as a ducktail spoiler, front fascia with pixel-like graphics, a raked front windshield, wheel arch extenders, and a continuous light strip along the hood line. The presentation, which should reflect at least 75% of the production vehicle, will also confirm the proportions and the final branding.

While it may share its platform with the upcoming Kia EV2, the Ioniq 2 will target a different type of buyer. At around 4,000 mm (157 in) long, the subcompact vehicle will not appeal to everyone.
Spy shots of recent test prototypes confirm a sportier styling than its sibling. Expect a lower hood, split headlamps, an aero-enhanced greenhouse, sloping rear, and a high rear deck for a more dynamic, youthful look. This design will trade a little cargo space for style, aiming to attract first-time buyers and younger customers who want their ride to reflect their personality.
Features & Safety
Equipment levels are expected to be generous in the Ioniq 2, with a digital instrument cluster, a large touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, heated front seats and steering wheel, USB-C ports, an electric sunroof, and 64-color ambient lighting. Autocar UK has learned about a “step change” in the interior, which could also mean that the Ioniq 2 is a potential candidate for Pleos Connect.

Safety tech should include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-spot View Monitor, a 360-degree camera, Rear Cross-traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and seven airbags.
Specifications
Two battery options are likely: an LFP pack in base grades, offering about 200 miles of range (WLTP), and a higher-capacity NMC pack pushing range to around 250 miles (WLTP). Vehicle-to-load (V2L) bi-directional charging should be standard, allowing the car to power small appliances or charge other devices and kick scooters.
Price & Release Date
Pricing in the UK is estimated around GBP 27,000 (around USD 36,463), with the Ioniq 2 positioned slightly higher than the Kia EV2. Autocar has learned that it will go on sale in Europe in the July-September 2026 period.
Given its size and expected specifications, we’re not convinced about its prospects in the U.S. However, if the Ioniq 2 manages to pass the North American entrance exam, it would slot below the Kona EV and compete with budget EV crossovers from Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, and Jeep.
