Jeep Wagoneer S Electric takes aim at the Lyriq & RZ

Share

The Jeep Wagoneer S is a premium midsize electric SUV that competes with the likes of Tesla Model Y, Lexus RZ and Genesis Electrified GV70. While it has been available at Jeep dealers for a few months, we recently got up close with the vehicle, and here’s what we found.

Dimensions & Positioning

The Wagoneer S Electric is not a full-size model and is unrelated to the body-on-frame Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. We are looking at a mid-size SUV slightly smaller than the Grand Cherokee. Underpinned by the STLA Large platform, it measures 192.4 in. in length, 74.8 in. in width, and 64.8 in. in height. It has a 113.0-inch wheelbase and offers 6.4 in. of ground clearance.

Design & Features

As a Jeep, the Wagoneer S is boxier than most European and Japanese luxury SUVs on the market and has the look of an authentic SUV.

The front of the vehicle has a forward-leaning appearance. It features slim and aggressive headlamps, a faux seven-slot grille that has been illuminated, a sloping hood with a power bulge, a functional lower air intake, and vertical side air inlets. The A-shaped lower grille has horizontal inserts and a radar for the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance systems in the central area at the bottom

A clean bodyline accentuates the windswept profile. As the roof slopes down, it forms a sporty yet classy “hovering wing,” which is supported by two soaring D-pillars. In the typical manner for Jeeps, the doors are plain, but they have flush-fitting handles that help reduce drag on the road. The proportions land somewhere between a crossover and a mid-size SUV. Built on the STLA Large platform, it has a long wheelbase and a noticeably long rear overhang.

The rear quarter panel stretches out, topped with a dual-spoiler setup, one flying buttress-style roof spoiler and another ducktail-type lip. We hadn’t noticed this in photos of the Wagoneers, but it stands out in person. The notably raked back glass, and a full-width tail lamp communicates sophistication at the rear.

Interior

Hopping into the driver’s seat, you get a good feeling in the cabin. The cockpit feels Audi-esque, especially with the dual-screen layout. There’s a main central touchscreen and a secondary screen below for climate controls, similar to what you’d find in older gas-powered Audis.

There’s a 12.3-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, a 12.3-inch navigation touchscreen in the upper part of the center, a 10.25-inch comfort touchscreen in the lower part of the center, and an optional 10.25-inch front passenger touchscreen. Electronic door latches, a 10-inch head-up display, and a segment-exclusive 19-speaker, 1,200-watt McIntosh audio system are also among the highlights here.

The gear selector is finished in chrome and feels solid. The center console is a mix of piano black and high-quality plastics with a nice texture. Two big cupholders sit next to a wireless charging pad hidden beneath the armrest, along with a decent storage compartment.

The steering wheel is thinner than we expected, not as chunky as in some other SUVs, but it sits well in hand. It carries Wagoneer badging instead of Jeep branding, reinforcing the car’s positioning. A thick ambient lighting strip runs from one door panel, across the dashboard, to the other side, neatly integrated and visually striking.

The digital instrument cluster is packed with useful info, including range, speed, tire pressure, charging status. It’s laid out cleanly and doesn’t feel overwhelming. A large speaker grille spans the width of the dashboard beneath the windshield, which is deeply raked. Visibility out the front is great, with well-sized mirrors, but the rear visibility is not at all that great. The rear window is unusually small for an SUV of this size.

The 12-way electrically adjustable driver seat is comfortable but not heavily bolstered. In the back, I found a spacious bench with a slight knees-up position, typical for an EV. There’s a center armrest with cupholders, scooped-out front seatbacks for extra legroom, and a decent recline angle.

Rear-seat amenities include air vents, two charging ports, seatback pockets, and heating and ventilation functions in the top-end version. The panoramic sunroof lets in a ton of light, making the cabin feel more spacious than it actually is.

The Jeep Wagoneer S has a total passenger volume of 99.5 cu. ft. It offers 30.6 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the rear seat. Additionally, it has a small frunk with 3.0 cu. ft. of extra storage space.
