Mercedes is preparing a second facelift for its best-selling U.S. model, the GLE, expected to arrive in dealerships during the first half of 2026. Although this isn’t a generational shift, the updates will go beyond typical cosmetic enhancements, incorporating significant tech.

Also next year, another important car, GLE, or GLE car family, super popular..that gets a complete remake next year as well, including an even longer-wheelbase version for the Chinese market.

We’ve identified 9 big updates expected on the refreshed 2026 Mercedes GLE Hybrid:

1. Illuminated Grille

The two big changes at the front are the illuminated grille, a tube of light around its perimeter, and Digital Light headlamps with the three-pointed star motif. The bumper will also be redesigned.

Taking inspiration from the latest E-Class, the new GLE will feature a three-dimensional illuminated grille, as shown in our exclusive renderings. While not to everyone’s taste, the striking visual element, which borders the grille, enhances the SUV’s luxury presence, especially at night. Additionally, it gives the midsize SUV the same presence as Mercedes’ flagship models.

2. Digital Light Headlamps

Spy photos confirm updated headlamps featuring Mercedes’ Digital Light technology, which we’ve reflected in our exclusive illustrations. Here, the beam contains 1.3 million pixels per headlamp, ensuring consistent illumination in various driving conditions.

Available with or without projection functionality, this system could also be offered as an on-demand upgrade post-purchase, enhancing safety and visibility. It will offer both day and night designs.

3. Redesigned Taillights

The rear is also expected to receive updates to stay consistent with the front, adopting the star motif light design seen here on the E-Class.

The refreshed GLE’s rear lights should adopt the twin-section LED units with distinctive star motif introduced in the new E-Class. This day-and-night design language modernizes the SUV’s exterior, keeping it fresh until the next-gen model arrives later this decade.

4. MBUX Superscreen

A large glass surface spanning the full width of the dashboard would integrate a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and 14-inch passenger touchscreen and also turbine-style round AC vents at either end. It will employ autostereoscopy to create a 3D effect, and uses artificial intelligence to learn the comfort systems that are used by the driver, and generate routines.

The full-width MBUX Superscreen, Active Ambient Lighting, a new steering wheel, and an upgraded audio system should round out the new cabin. Pictured is the CLA Electric.

MBUX Superscreen allows the users to do video calls, browse the web, stream music, watch videos, and play games. The central and passenger displays offer apps like Zoom, WebEx, Vivaldi Browser, Spotify, Tidal, Audible, Amazon Music, Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, and Angry Birds.

5. Active Ambient Lighting

The cabin atmosphere will likely be enhanced by active ambient lighting. This system dynamically adjusts interior illumination based on driving conditions or audio playback (Mercedes calls it ‘Sound Visualization’ where the lights change according to the beats) creating an engaging and relaxing environment.

6. New Steering Wheel

With next year’s update, the steering wheel of the GLE should shift to a design similar to the updated E-Class, sporting new spokes and redesigned controls.

7. Advanced Autonomous Driving Features

We will proliferate the tech in terms of ADAS, in terms of the infotainment, and all those different things that are relevant to the customers from BEV to ICE.

Expected to be powered by the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) and NVIDIA DRIVE Orin, the facelifted GLE will offer Level 2++ autonomous driving capabilities, bringing the GLE’s capabilities in line with the smaller CLA. Enhanced driver-assist functions and advanced point-to-point navigation should boost convenience and safety.

8. Upgraded Burmester 4D Sound

The Burmester 4D audio system puts speakers and transducers in places like the seats, roof, foot well and doors.

We expect an audio upgrade with the Burmester 4D surround sound system that works with acoustic massage to convey a “feel” of the music. Expect higher clarity, depth, and spatial sound through around 21 speakers and seat-mounted sound transducers, elevating the in-cabin audio experience.

9. P2 Strong Hybrid Powertrain

As per JESMB, an advanced 48-volt full-hybrid (‘P2’ system) is reportedly in the works for the GLE. Expected to pair with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, this system, like the M 252 powertrain in the new CLA, will enable extended periods of electric-only driving improving efficiency and reducing emissions. The current 49-mile electric-range PHEV system from the GLE 450e is expected to remain unchanged.
