Next-gen 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid & Plug-in Hybrid: What to Expect

Update: The entire article has been revised.

The Toyota RAV4, America’s best-selling SUV and Toyota’s top seller in the U.S., will enter its sixth generation for the 2026 model in the following months. The redesigned model is migrating to an all-electrified lineup, with Hybrid (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) options across three distinct themes: Core, Rugged, and Sport.

Our expectations for the new Toyota hybrid and plug-in SUVs laid out in this story are based on our experience with the RAV4, confirmed specifications, official press material, and recent developments in the compact SUV segment.

Design

Toyota has confirmed three themes for the 2026 RAV4: Core, Rugged, and Sport. Each style adapts the brand’s hammerhead shark-inspired front end like the fifth-gen Prius, and ninth-gen Camry, but with unique details.

Core models (LE, XLE, Limited) will continue as the mainstream choice in the U.S., with a body-colored grille, chiseled sides, and wheel sizes ranging from 17 to 20 inches.

The Rugged design is exclusive to the Woodland grade. Expect a raised ride height, black split grille with integrated LED lighting, standard roof rails with crossbars, and all-terrain tires.

Sport models (SE, XSE, and the new GR Sport) will bring more aggressive details. The GR Sport, developed with Toyota Gazoo Racing, will feature unique spoilers, 20-inch wheels, and motorsport-inspired body tuning.

Compared to today’s RAV4, the greenhouse appears curvier, the tail lamps sleeker, and the license plate garnish more squared-off. A large roof spoiler and fins should aid aerodynamics. Expect a more adventurous and modern look, while retaining familiar proportions.

Specifications

Dimensions

The Core variants of the sixth-gen RAV4 have the same dimensions as the outgoing SUV, with the Rugged and Sport versions differing (less than an inch) in length, width and height from the different bumpers and roof rails. Expect interior packaging and cargo volume to remain similar, around 37.5 cu.ft. behind the second row.

TNGA-K

When the fifth-generation RAV4 was introduced in 2018, it made the transition to the TNGA-K platform. For the upcoming sixth generation, Toyota is set to continue using this base with modernization. By increasing the chassis’s rigidity by reinforcing the frame joints and suspension mounting points, Toyota says comfort and handling have improved.

NVH

The RAV4 Hybrid has faced criticism for its lack of refinement. The hybrid system is also known for being noisy. When combined with wind noise, it can be unsettling during long-distance travel. Toyota engineers have taken feedback into account during the development of the next-generation RAV4 Hybrid. The vehicle uses a high-damping adhesive, which Toyota says brings down micro-vibrations and road noise.

THS 5

The next-gen RAV4 gains the THS 5 system for improved performance and fuel efficiency. A clever redesign, without disturbing the RAV4’s USPs, should ensure that it stays distinct in the increasingly crowded Toyota SUV lineup. Image: Toyota

Toyota is introducing the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5) on the RAV4 Hybrid. Expectations are that the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with electric motors will deliver 226 hp in front-wheel drive models and 236 hp in all-wheel drive versions. This is a noticeable gain over the current Hybrid variant, and should result in quicker acceleration and better responsiveness while passing longer vehicles on the highway.

Another significant development is that the RAV4 is hybrid-only with the 2026 model in the U.S., ditching the gas model. The company has seen a sustained increase in the share of hybrids, and was bold enough to launch the Camry exclusively as a hybrid, with fantastic results.

With the THS 5 powertrain that debuted in the 2025 Camry (pictured), the new RAV4 Hybrid is expected to achieve notable gains in refinement, and performance.

Next-gen RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

The 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will also shift to a new system with a larger battery, silicon carbide semiconductors, and improved charging capability. Expectations are that the PHEV will produce up to 320 hp, provide 50 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge, and deliver all-wheel drive as standard across all trims.

Woodland and XSE PHEV models will support DC fast charging from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes. Towing capacity will reach up to 3,500 pounds on select AWD grades.

Features

Inside, Toyota has redesigned the cabin for improved usability and a cleaner look. All grades will feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and either a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch central touchscreen with integrated HVAC controls. The temperature controls and defoggers also get physical buttons, below which sits the Drive Mode toggle.

The latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system, powered by the new Arene software platform, should deliver wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual Bluetooth connectivity, and faster response times. The multifunction steering wheel is also new, and gets controls for volume, phone, audio tracks, lane, and cruise control.

A Head-Up Display will be available on higher trims like the Limited Hybrid and XSE Plug-in Hybrid, as well as a pair 45W USB Type-C charging ports. Rear seat passengers get outboard heated seats and dual 15W USB Type-C ports.

We expect the redesigned model to offer a more comfortable front seat experience retaining the 8-way power adjustment with memory function. Based on our experience with the current-gen RAV4 models, which offered excellent space levels in the front, this trait should remain unchanged in the new version.

Safety

The 2026 RAV4 will debut Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, integrated into the Arene software platform. Expectations are that this version will build on the current TSS 3.0 suite (listed below) with enhanced hardware and detection capability, offering stronger performance in areas such as collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and lane assistance.

  • Proactive Driving Assist
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
