Pick of the Day: 1973 Lincoln Continental Mark IV

If there’s one thing that appeals to me most about certain cars from the 1970s, it’s the unapologetic emphasis on size and comfort. Lincolns of the era were known for being smooth and stately, and the “Comfort Lounge” front seats certainly lived up to their name. The Pick of the Day is a 1973 Lincoln Continental Mark IV two-door coupe listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

“All original, well-maintained with documentation,” the listing says. “Clean, straight body, no rust, clean underbody.”

The Mark IV (made for the 1972-76 model years), at almost 19 feet in length, had a bold footprint for being a two-door coupe. This one reportedly wears its original paint, and exterior features include chrome bumpers, quad hideaway headlights, waterfall-style grille, antenna, rocker and body side moldings, dual side mirrors, vinyl roof, and faux Continental kit at the rear. Note that the hubcaps on the car are from a 1971 Continental Mark III.

The luxury car segment was a competitive space, and Lincoln pointed the Continental squarely at Cadillac. One advertisement discussed how Lincoln invited 100 Cadillac owners to a ride-and-drive event in California. During a blindfolded ride-along, 64 of them said the Continental had a more comfortable ride than the Cadillac. Then, during a driving test (hopefully not blindfolded this time), 66 of them said the Continental was easier to drive.

The cabin of this Mark IV delivers those cozy Comfort Lounge front seats upholstered in Ivory leather, and contrasting black carpeting and dash. Features include deep-cut pile carpeting, woodgrain trim, power windows, Philco radio, automatic temperature control, and ambient lighting.

Under the hood is a 460ci V-8 (220 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque) mated to a C6 three-speed automatic transmission. An informational placard in the engine bay conveys some of the car’s tech specs: 600-cfm four-barrel carburetor, 22.5-gallon fuel capacity, and 12-volt electrical system.

For the ultimate “land yacht” experience, the Mark IV will deliver supreme comfort and loads of road presence. It might even make some Cadillac owners jealous.

The asking price is $22,500 or best offer.
