The S54 inline-six was regarded as one of the best engines ever built by BMW or any other manufacturer. It delivered instant throttle response, linear power delivery, and strong revs all the way to the 8,000-rpm redline. Our Pick of the Day, a 2003 BMW M3 Convertible, is powered by a low-mileage, unmodified S54. The car is available now, having been listed on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Gold Canyon, Arizona.
“This is a showroom condition 2003 BMW E46 M3 convertible with a six-speed manual and 24,000 miles,” the listing says. “’I am the third owner of this car, with the original owner placing approximately 18,500 miles on the car over 16 years.”
The E46 compact executive car, sold from 1999 through 2005 in the North American market, marked the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series. An M3 performance variant was introduced in June 2000 in coupe form, and a convertible counterpart was unveiled in April 2001. BMW was so proud of the car that the company said in an advertisement, “We looked perfection squarely in the eye. Perfection blinked.”

The Titanium Silver exterior of this M3 is said to be “just short of flawless.” Features include fog lamps, vented front fenders, black retractable top, body side moldings, integrated trunk-mounted LED brake lamp, and quad exhaust tips.

The interior features gray leather upholstery, heated front seats, power lumbar support, power windows, and center console. An audio jack has been added to the Harman Kardon audio system to enable phone connectivity and add a touch of modern convenience.

Under the hood is that legendary S54 inline-six, which was rated at 333 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. The seller says that maintenance and recalls are up to date, and a rod bearing service was completed under warranty. Although the Continental tires are said to have good tread remaining, they are date-coded 2009 and should be replaced.
“If you’re looking for an exceptionally cared for, low-mileage, unmolested, original six-speed manual E46 M3 in excellent condition, this is it,” the seller says. “Always garaged and covered.”
The seller is asking $39,000, and the purchase price will include manuals, window sticker, two key fobs, and one valet key. Be sure to check out the video below, which shows an exterior walk-around and an interior overview.
