Pick of the Day: 2003 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

The early 2000s saw a frenzy of retro-inspired automotive designs. The wave included cars like the Volkswagen New Beetle, the Plymouth Prowler, the Chrysler PT Cruiser, and the Ford Thunderbird. But one automotive customization shop took things even further by putting 1950s-era body parts on a brand-new Corvette. The Pick of the Day, a 2003 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, was one of only 200 units hand-assembled in such a fashion, and it has been listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Daytona Beach, Florida.

“This commemorative edition Corvette was customized by Advanced Automotive Technologies (AAT) and is number 16,” the listing says. In recognition of the Corvette’s 50th year, Advanced Automotive Technologies (AAT) of Rochester Hills, Michigan produced 200 vehicles that bridged the gap between 1953 design and 2003 engineering. AAT developed the conversion in a way that allowed all-new fiberglass panels to fit directly onto the C5 (1997-2004) Corvette chassis, requiring minimal structural changes.

Exterior features include C1-style body work along with a chrome grille, headlight grilles, bodyside moldings, and retro-inspired tail fins. One of the most interesting things about the build is the fact that the rear end has the appearance of six exhaust outlets. Only the center four, mounted underneath the car, are functional. The exterior has been protected with a five-year ceramic coating.  “This car is in showroom condition, recently won Best Chevrolet at a car show in Kissimmee, Florida,” the seller says.

The cockpit is upholstered in Torch Red leather, and features include power-adjustable bucket seats, head-up display, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bose CD audio system, and cruise control. Woodgrain trim has been added, and a Commemorative Edition placard mounted between the seats denotes this as car number 016 in the production sequence.

Under the hood is an LS1 5.7-liter V-8 that was rated at 350 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. A 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential transfer power to the rear wheels. Upgrades include cold air intake, engine dress-up equipment, and Borla exhaust system. The odometer shows just 19,990 miles.

For a car that blends modern reliability and performance with rich nostalgia, this uniquely-styled Corvette delivers all of the above. The asking price is $87,500 or best offer.
