The VW ID.4 has been pivotal in Volkswagen’s electrification strategy, as its first mass-produced bespoke EV relevant in North America, Europe, and Asia. Now five years old, the compact SUV is due for a thorough update globally in 2026. With that refresh, it is expected to adopt a new design language, and perhaps shift to the ‘VW ID. Tiguan’ branding.
Here’s everything that has been reported, and our expectations from the new ID.4.
Design
The VW ID.4 introduced a clean, rounded design that has been received positively by customers worldwide. The ID.4 Facelift/ID. Tiguan, however, is expected to look more sophisticated, responding to the influx of new electric SUVs in recent years.
ID. Cross influences
As we’ve depicted in our exclusive renderings, the new ID.4 should borrow cues from the ID. Cross concept, which previews the brand’s new design direction for EVs. Taller and squarer headlights should emphasize its SUV identity, while a longer, more pronounced hood should create a muscular stance that aligns with traditional SUV proportions.

IQ. Light
The new headlights should integrate ID. Light HD matrix technology with interactive functions. In addition to precisely turning off individual LEDs to prevent glare for oncoming traffic, they are expected to include a Lane Light feature that projects an illuminated pathway within the lane markings, improving orientation on narrow or dark roads.
Sharper details
On the sides, sharply-cut 21-inch alloy wheels are likely, reinforcing a conventional SUV look despite the EV-typical aerodynamics. Louvers integrated into the C-pillar should further distinguish the profile. At the rear, redesigned taillights with twin rectangular light modules are anticipated to lift the SUV styling. The company may offer fresh paint choices as well, possibly including the ID.7‘s new Aquamarine Blue Metallic in some markets.
Interior
15-inch Touchscreen & Updated Software
The ID. Tiguan should gain a new 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replacing the ID.4’s 12.9-inch unit. The larger display is expected to improve readability, accessibility, and system performance.

Push Buttons
Volkswagen R&D boss Kai Grünitz confirmed to Autocar that the ID.4 will introduce a revised dashboard and user interface with its facelift. A new climate control panel with physical buttons and a rotary dial for volume is planned to reduce driver distraction. The steering wheel should also revert to physical push-back buttons for easier operation.
Smart Climate Control
The ID. Tiguan may debut a smart climate control system that adjusts temperatures in individual zones based on the sun’s position. A sensor in the windshield would detect the angle of incoming sunlight and direct cooling to warmer areas first. The system is also expected to store personal settings, useful for vehicles shared by multiple drivers.
Specifications
MEB+ Platform
The VW ID. Tiguan will feature technical revisions as well, right down to the cell level. On September 12, 2025, Citing Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer, Auto Express reported that the ID.4 Facelift will ride on an upgraded platform called ‘MEB+’ and come with new battery technology, including LFP.

LFP Battery
In Europe and Asia, BYD and other Chinese automakers are proving challenging to compete with due to their leadership in LFP battery technology. Volkswagen is countering this with its own iron-based battery, potentially using cell-to-pack construction, to lower costs in those regions.
Longer Range
Across variants, we’re expecting to see a notable improvement in range and charging times. “…the enhanced MEB+ platform will be launched with a further increase in range and efficiency of around 10 percent,” Volkswagen Group had announced in September 2023. Currently, the U.S.-spec ID.4 can manage up to 291 miles (EPA estimate) on a charge.
Release Date
Autocar reports that the VW ID. Tiguan will debut after Q2 2026. U.S. production of the refreshed SUV is expected to continue at Volkswagen’s facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with sales beginning in the fall of that year. Despite the design, technology, and hardware changes, pricing should remain close to the current ID.4, starting at about USD 45,000.
TopElectricSUV says
Volkswagen’s best-selling EV worldwide should become more practical with the refresh. The facelift should mimic a generational change, bringing upgrades in styling, ergonomics, comfort, efficiency, and range.
