What we know & expect from this future BEV

Update: Entire story revised based on new information.

The upcoming fifth-generation BMW X5, arriving 27 years after the nameplate’s debut, is set to include an all-electric version. According to Bimmerpost forum member ynguldyn, the new model (codename: BMW G65) will feature a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) variant. This will be the first tailpipe-free X5 offered worldwide, and these are our expectations from the future vehicle.

Design

Spy shots suggest the next-gen BMW X5 family will maintain a familiar silhouette but adopt a distinctly new face. Embodying the brand’s next-generation design language, first seen on the 2026 iX3, the front end should look sleek and technical.

The BMW X5 Electric will borrow design cues from the 2026 BMW iX3, but it won’t just be a longer and wider body.

Large glass surfaces extending into the kidney grille should integrate the headlights and outward-slanting DRL elements, forming BMW’s new four-eyed look. The kidney grille, inspired by 1960s Neue Klasse models, will be vertically stacked and noticeably narrow.

On the sides, BMW designers are expected to fit door handles with “tabs,” and contour lighting that automatically extends with proximity sensing. An AI-powered charging flap should also open and close automatically for added convenience. At the rear, we expect horizontal tail lights stretching into the center to emphasize the SUV’s futuristic character and width.

Interior & Features

BMW Panoramic Vision

The battery-electric BMW X5 is expected to feature a minimalist interior, with a wide touchscreen mostly replacing the switches, knobs, joysticks, and dials of older BMWs. Instead of a traditional instrument cluster, it should sport the new head-up display system called “BMW Panoramic Vision,” projecting information across a nearly full-width printed surface in the lower section of the windshield.

BMW Panoramic Vision is unlikely to replace a conventional 3D head-up display, which will probably remain available as an option. Another interior highlight is expected to be a 17.9-inch parallelogram-shaped central touchscreen with matrix backlight technology and a 3340×1440 resolution. All displays will run BMW Operating System X, supporting extensive personalization and apps like Zoom, Spotify, Disney+, YouTube, and AirConsole.

Ceremonial Light Carpet

According to a BMW Blog report published on October 8, 2024, the BMW X5 Electric will feature a “Ceremonial Light Carpet.” We expect this to be an updated version of the Dynamic Light Carpet which we observed in the i5 and i7.

Snapdragon Ride Pilot

We also expect a new automated driving system built on the Snapdragon Ride Platform, that debuted in the iX3. It enables contextual lane changes, highway assistant with hands-free driving on approved roads, and AI-powered parking assistance with in-cabin monitoring. A new central computer, with 20 times the computing power of the previous generation, processes data from high-resolution cameras, radar, and HD maps for 360-degree coverage.

Specifications

CLAR Platform Conversion BEV

The X5 Electric will ride on a modified version of the CLAR platform, originally designed for combustion models. As a result, it will not be a bespoke “Neue Klasse” EV like the 2026 BMW iX3, 2026 BMW i3 sedan, and the BMW iX4, since that family will initially target the (European) mid-size segment. For BMW Group, the multi-energy platform offers reduced development time, flexible manufacturing, and a quicker path to profitability.

6th gen eDrive

Although the X5 Electric’s chassis will not be as advanced as the iX3’s, much of its hardware is expected to be just as modern. The electric motors will incorporate sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, which reduces energy losses by 40%, weight by 10%, and manufacturing costs by 20%.

AWD Configuration

The all-wheel-drive model should add an asynchronous motor (ASM) on the front axle to the existing electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) at the rear. In a potential M70 xDrive version, the system output could reach about 600 hp and 600 lb.-ft. of torque. This setup is expected to enable 0-60 mph acceleration in roughly 3.5 seconds.

According to a BMW Blog report dated August 25, 2025, the X5 Electric AWD lineup should include lower-end 50 xDrive and 60 xDrive configurations as well. However, a full M version positioned against the next-gen X5 M is not expected.

Battery & Charging

The battery pack will also feature sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, with 20% higher energy density at the cell level and 30% faster charging capability compared to older BMW EVs.

Energy storage capacity should be at least 118 kWh, providing no less than 300 miles of range (EPA-est.). Built with cylindrical cells and operating at 800 volts, it should support charging at up to 350 kW, enabling a 10-80% session in about 20 minutes.

Release Date & Price

In late 2026, production of fully-electric Sports Activity Vehicles will get underway here in Spartanburg – a further step towards strengthening our global resilience.

The BMW X5 Electric will likely debut in mid-2026 and go on sale in the U.S. towards the end of next year. BMW Group will manufacture the electric SUV alongside the gas-powered next-gen X5 at the Spartanburg plant, according to Bimmerpost forum member ynguldyn. Pricing may start at under USD 80,000, pitting it against the likes of the Volvo EX90, Polestar 3, and the Tesla Model X.

BMW Group said in 2022 that it will invest USD 1 billion to upgrade the Spartanburg plant for manufacturing EVs.

By 2030, BMW Group plans to build at least six pure-electric models in the U.S. Production of the first EV in Spartanburg is officially scheduled for late 2026.

TopElectricSUV says

The BMW X5 Electric is shaping up to be a traditionally designed alternative to the Tesla Model X, positioned alongside the BMW iX. Built to the quality standards of an ~$80,000 luxury SUV and with German engineering at its core, it will appeal to customers who want a classic X5 experience with an electric powertrain, without polarizing design cues or a six-figure price.
