Pick of the Day: 2002 Chevrolet S-10 Xtreme Pickup

“Hey dad! How about this truck as a graduation present?” is a unique way to start a vehicle for-sale listing, so it caught my attention. It made me think of how lucky a fresh graduate would be to have such a unique ride as our Pick of the Day: a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 Xtreme extended-cab pickup listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in La Verne, California.

Building on the GMT325 platform from the second-generation (1993-2004) compact S-10 pickup, the “Xtreme” was a sport truck that stood out from its work-duty and off-road-oriented peers. Positioned as a sporty, street-focused pickup, it came in regular-cab and extended-cab configurations, but was only available with two-wheel drive.

“Purchased new at Quality Chevrolet in Escondido, California on 8/2/2002,” the seller says. “This truck remains completely stock and unmodified (except for a K&N air induction and air filter setup) — something that has become increasingly rare among S-10 Xtremes.”

The brochure for the 2002 S-10 says, “You’re just about guaranteed to turn a few heads when you pull up in a Chevy S10 Xtreme. Its low, street-hugging look complements the standard ZQ8 Sport Suspension Package. The package includes high-pressure, gas-charged Bilstein shocks, quick-ratio power steering, and wide 16-inch Eagle GA tires mounted on 16- by 8-inch aluminum wheels. Specific ground effects, fog lamps, and an available stripe package add an even more customized look.”

The Summit White exterior features fog lamps, color-keyed bumpers, underbody kit, a SNUGTOP locking tonneau cover, and Reflex spray-in bedliner. The extended cab area is accessible via a handy rear-hinged door on the driver side.

Interior features include gray cloth bucket seats, center armrest, power windows, air conditioning, and Delco AM/FM/CD audio system.

There’s an inboard-facing, fold-down jump seat in the rear that gave me flashbacks of riding in a similar S-10 that my grandfather owned. In a pinch, it’ll seat an adult who’s small in stature, but it might not be a comfy ride for a cross-country trek.

Under the hood is a 4.3-liter Vortec V-6 (190 horsepower/245 lb-ft of torque) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Of special note: According to the promotional materials, the Xtreme was not engineered or equipped for towing, so in the realm of truck-duty tasks, that’s something you won’t want to ask it to do. The odometer shows just 41,011 original miles.

“Garage-kept, non-smoker owned,” the listing concludes. Do you have a graduate in your life who deserves to be rewarded with a compact sport truck? They’d be Xtremely happy to see this in the driveway.

The asking price is $24,900 or best offer.
