Pick of the Day: 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe

“Neatly tailored simplicity” was a phrase that Chevrolet used when describing its 1961-model-year lineup. Indeed, by the early 1960s, Chevrolet and other automakers had moved away from the fin-heavy designs of the late 1950s in favor of boxier and more restrained lines. The Pick of the Day is a 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air two-door hardtop listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller near Toronto, Ontario.

“Decided to sell our beautiful and rare Bel Air with very desirable Bubbletop roofline,” the listing says. “Was restored around 2012 on full rotisserie and has held up very well.”

The defining features of Bel Air two-door hardtop models from 1961 and 1962 were their curvy rooflines, thin pillars, and generous glass. That’s why they became known as Bubbletops, and why today, they are highly collectible among classic car enthusiasts.

The navy-blue exterior features chrome bumpers, quad headlights, antenna, body side moldings, dual side mirrors, and Rally wheels wrapped in whitewall tires. The seller says, “Body is straight as an arrow, underside is very clean.”

The Bel Air was positioned as a mid-level trim between the budget-oriented Biscayne and the premium Impala. The brochure said, “The Bel Air has all it takes to make it America’s popular model. Its clean lines promise lasting beauty and value.”

The interior is trimmed in tan/brown cloth and vinyl. For 1961, Bel Air’s standard features included a glove box light, automatic dome light, foam cushioned seats, deluxe door handles and window cranks, twin rear ash trays, and deluxe steering wheel with thumb-button horn.

Under the hood is a 327ci Turbo-Fire V-8 mated to an automatic transmission. “Car drives great, gets lots of attention. Ready for summer cruising and car shows,” the listing says.

Any Bubbletop in this kind of condition is a strong investment for collectors and hot-rod enthusiasts. As a rotisserie-restored, turn-key classic, it’s a no-brainer.

The asking price is $40,000 USD or best offer, and a car cover is included.
