Best Affordable Family SUV? 7 Sub-$40,000 Contenders Tested

Share

With a $40,000 budget and a focus on value-for-money, we’ve gathered seven of Australia’s most appealing medium SUVs to find out which offers the broadest jack-of-all-trades skill set.

The methodology was base-model Japanese and Korean versus top-spec Chinese, to see if the fundamental goodness of established brands can trump the tinsel and fairy lights of market newcomers.

Thing is, it’s a straightforward premise with a not-so-simple answer – fielding a pair of Chinese hybrids (MG, Haval) against entry-level Japanese/Koreans (Mazda, Hyundai, Nissan, Honda) and Korea’s quirky, left-field KGM.

Chasing Cars’ Nathan Ponchard and John Law discovered that sound basic design always trumps fancy overheads, but if you can combine both you’ll have the best-value car on sale in Australia today.
