A recall for 4,125 2015 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, XTS and Cadillac ATS, CTS, SRX vehicles due to an airbag defect.
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, XTS, 2015-2016 Cadillac ATS, CTS, and SRX vehicles. The front-driver air bag inflator may rupture during deployment.
Affected VINs should be searchable now at the NHTSA website.
Here is the relevant information from the NHTSA Recall notice:
NHTSA ID Number: 26V329
Manufacturer: General Motors, LLC
Components: AIR BAGS
Potential Number of Units Affected: 4,125
Estimated percentage with defect: 1%
Descriptive Information
Description of defect or noncompliance:
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2015 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and XTS and 2015-2016 model year Cadillac ATS, CTS, and SRX vehicles. In these vehicles, the front-driver airbag inflator may contain a supplier manufacturing defect that may result in inflator rupture during deployment.
Description of the safety risk, including crash, fire, death, injury:
An inflator rupture may cause metal fragments to pass through the airbag and into the vehicle interior, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants.
Description of the cause:
These inflators were built with propellant from two propellant lots that may contain speckled low density (SLD) propellant. SLD increases the likelihood of a high-pressure deployment that can lead to an inflator rupture.
Identification of any warning that can occur:
None stated.
Chronology
On April 2, 2026, a GM investigator submitted a report to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program following review of an analysis of propellant from ARC “D5” variant driver airbag inflators collected from the field. GM initiated an analysis of ARC D5 inflators after observing speckled low density (SLD) propellant inside “MC” variant ARC inflators that GM recalled in NHTSA Recall 22V246. SLD has been identified as increasing the likelihood of a high-pressure deployment that can lead to an inflator rupture, and certain D5 inflators were built with the same propellant lots that were used in the recalled MC inflators. GM is aware of one field rupture and one test rupture associated with these propellant lots, both in recalled MC inflators.
GM recovered and dissected five D5 inflators. Of these, one had a high occurrence of SLD propellant. GM is not aware of any inflator ruptures in D5 inflators. On May 14, 2026, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided, out of an abundance of caution, to conduct a safety recall of D5 inflators manufactured with the suspect propellant manufacturing lots.
Remedy
Description of Remedy
Remedy Type: Replace
Description of remedy program:
Dealers will replace the front-driver airbag module.
How remedy component differs from recalled component:
The remedy component does not contain an inflator that was manufactured with propellant from the suspect propellant lots.
Description of recall schedule:
Dealers will be notified on May 21, 2026. Owner interim notification is estimated to start mailing on July 6, 2026. GM will provide an estimate for notification of an available remedy when one is available.
